I still have to install them, possibly next weekend after July 4th. Here's what I got from a junked v6 '00 Camry. Since it was at only 14K miles, the brake pads were almost new, so I will reuse them. Same for the disks, and backing plates, although they were very badly rusted and had some hammer marks from the junk yard. New good quality disks can be had for like $40-50 each.
So my total for parts and supplies will be less than $300 USD
From a junk-yard, for a total of $210 usd):
- 2 backing plates (with all springs and the parking brake pads, plus the parking brake cables attached) $25 each
- 2 calipers (with brake pads and the flex house attached, and the 4 mounting bolts for the calipers to the backing plates), $50 each
- 2 disks $25 each
- proportioning valve (goes in the engine compartment) (should have been $35, but I got it for free). I don't plan to install this unless the rear brakes turn out need more pressure.
From the dealership:
- Toyota wheel hub o-ring ($8) which needs to be replaced when you reinstall the hubs
- Toyota brake fluid ($5 ?)
- Caliper repair kit $30, which includes everything you need to recondition both calipers. I didn't need this, but I damaged one of the boots on the caliper when trying to clean it from the dirt and the only way to get it was to buy the kit... It includes some caliper grease too.
The above is all the parts that you need I believe. I'm not sure if I can reuse my parking brake cables - will see when I install.
In addtion, I got the following:
- anti-rust spray paint ($3) to paint the backing plates, since they had some rust. Used it also to paint the disks (except for the braking surfaces) as well.
- a jar of caliper grease (synthetic) $8
- resurface the disks $16 for the pair ($8 each at PepBoys)
- brake cleaner spray $3
- brake bleeding kit (one-man type with a valve so you do not need a second person to pump the brakes, $5)
