Help! Check Engine Light

Hi everyone,
I went and had my car worked on today, nothing major just oil change serp belt and brakes. NOWWW my check engine light is on. Mechanic said did I check my gas cap bc that may set it off. Ok checked it and its fine. I did notice that 2 screws are missing on the cover to the air filter.....do i need to worry? is there anything else I should be looking for?
thanks in advance

screws shouldnt be missing. where did you have this work done? take it back and have them actually check to see what code is setting off the light. a loose or bad gas cap can set it off, but the code will tell you for sure what the problem is. though nothing they worked on would set off a code.

camrys have this issue with the gas cap that every mechanic hears about on a daily basis. Not properly tighting it will lead to the check engine light. I get that once in a while on my 2001 and usually end up resetting it myself cuz the deal wants to charge me $60 for something I can do in 30 secs... damn dealers...

We all know plenty of times when the Check Engine blinks on and it turns out to be for no reason at all. I bought a cheap mini-scanner device that reads any codes and then shuts off the CEL. I got it from harbor freight for $30 and it has already paid for itself more than once. But you do not even need one of these to put out the CEL. If you are pretty sure there is no real problem, just disconnect the battery for a minute or two and then reconnect the clamp. If the light goes out and stays out, problem solved!

But when you do that, you lose all your presets and settings on the radio, clock resets, and the custom engine data gets reset, so it has to "learn" over again, which is why you see it idling alot higher after you remove the battery.

Marc,

I paid $40 for that one from Harbor Freight when it was on sale. How did you get it for $30?

Mike

I bought it about a year ago. Harbor freight makes a couple of them, that basically do the same thing. The style and brands change all the time at harbor freight, like every week. The answer is that you and i probably got different models that just do the same thing. I'd post a pic but they are not selling mine right now. It is just a little contraption about 6 inches long, with the OBD II plug and a tiny screen that blinks your codes 3 times and then clears the codes. Same thing only different. It was on sale that day, i was in the store so i snapped it up. Good thing too, i search their website and all they have to sell right now is the expensive one.

Marc and Geoff,

The one I have is item number 46030. I paid $39.99 for it a couple of years ago when it was on sale.

Mike
