Engine Trouble PLEASE HELP hello, when i was driving to rhode island (i live in mass) my check engine light came on. i checked my oil and cooling levels and they are both good. i brought it to the dealer and they said it needs a new pipe sensor, the one in there is rusted. it will cost me 320 dollars for the repair. are they ripping me off, can it be done myself? my father (divorced) is a mechanic and can probably fix it correct? please respond ASAP. here or to

BLUEMEANIE :
The light came on cause you were headed into RI ...nah, j/k
bro. I went to RISD. Get one from a junker. Pops can prolly do the labor too, dealerships are ALWAYS way over priced. ...keep in mind what they charge for an oil change.

is it easy to remove? what is a pipe sensor anyways? there is a local junkyard near me. if i can do it myself i'll go grab the part.
Chris Corolla S:
pipe sensor? Maybe they mean oxygen sensor. Anyway those things can be expensive. Just ask them how much is the part and how much is the labor. The dealership will give you a good price on the part, but might jack you on labor. If you can find cheaper labor somewhere else just make sure they aren't charging more than the dealer for the part. Otherwise get your self a Hayne's Manual and buy the part and put it in yourself. Or get your divorced father to do it. Good luck

Try this... I figured this out with my Mom's Subie Forester; Turn off your car... Pipe sensor??? WTF? Chris is that supposed to be layman's terms for exhaust manifold/ "headers" ??? Unscrew your gas tank cap... Rescrew (<- that sounds dirty, huh?

your cap untill it clicks 3 TIMES... Turn back on... see if your check engine light is still on... Disclamer: I am not positive if this problem was only related to the ScoobieRoo, (like if it had some sort of "Gas Cap Sensor" or something wierd like that, but you misewell give it a shot to see if you can save your self some money...) Almost all your sensors AND WIRES CONNECTING THEM, especially sensors like your "heated-oxygen sensor" (<- I think that is the "proper" term for the one located in your headers that monitors the result of the Air/Fuel mixture) are extremly sensitive, mostly due to the exteme amounts of heat that is exerted on them... which can often lead to rapid corrosion etc... Therefore... take caution, and look in your manual (I know where they are for the 5S-FE but I am not positve about yours...) find them... gently "wiggle them" to check for any loose connections and check to see if any extreme corrosion is going on anywhere under your hood... see if any wires have "problems" and all your other general under the hood kinda checks... that you would do for "general preventative matinance"... try to restart... let your car idle at 2k-rpms for about 2-3 minutes... often time sensors located in your exhaust manifold do not engage and begin to work properly untill they reach approximently 600degrees Farenheit... Well all I can say with out being there to see your car is... good luck!
BLUEMEANIE:
If its a sensor it should be easy depending on its placement but I'd say go to the local auto store first, pickup a Haynes manual and read up on it. Good Luck
Kocho:
Ask the dealer what sensor exactly you need - they should be able to show it to you or at least give you a part # and you can look it up with the parts dept. I'm not sure what a "pipe sensor" is - probably one of the sensors on the exhaust, but could be any number of things. Ask them also about the diagnostic code(s) just in case. If you decide to replace yourself, get a bottle of PB blaster or Liquid Wrench first to loosen it as you say it is rusty
