The fuel-air mixture in internal combustion engines would burn better and more powerful when the air is cool.
It is on this concept that intercooled turbo was invented- the intercooler cools the compressed air which has become warm due to the turbo's compression. The cold compressed air enters the engine and the result is a good, clean and powerful combustion which equals more power.
Is is on this concept that a cold-air intake was invented as well. Instead of having the intake hole in the engine bay, where the air has been warmed by the engine, the intake hole is moved down closer to the ground, were the air is generally cooler.
The difference between the two is that a regular intake takes air from inside the engine compartment. A cold-air intake usually snakes down a gap between the engine and the radiator and takes air from underneath the car OR it takes the air from between the fender and firewall.
Cold-air intakes usually generally a bit more power than regular intakes, around 1-3hp.

Just want to know if I should get cold air intake for gen3 v6. If I install it myself is it really hard to do it and If i do it what kind a pipe should i get that will fit gen3 my car....
I'm guessing the pipe diameter should be about 2.5-3". Get mandrel bend pipes.
First, you have to remove the stock intake and all its resonators/chambers. If you want a true CAI, you have to snake the pipe down to the left fender through a gap beside the battery where the stock intake used to go. You'll also have to remove the plastic liner under the bumper to remove the stock components and slide in the new intake.
The SC3 guys should be able to provide you with a pic, and I think Gibson has a DIY on his site.
If you're mechanically inclined and like poking around the engine bay, wouldn't be a problem at all. Took me about 20 mins to remove the stock bits and another 15 mins to install the new one.

Its not hard to install but, that all depends on how mechnically inclined you are.

2.5" or 3" OD (outer diameter) pipe.
If your interested in building your own CAI let me know and i'll post up the links but, for the meantime you can checkout the pics of my custom made CAI.
Sorry forgot to follow up with my Q. anyways I already took out my stock intake, right now im running it with a custom intake just not cold air =(, The pix that 88le showed me its seem that the your car is different from mine, i have a 94 camry.
I just wonder if theres any Cold air intake for a different car taht will b simmillar to gen3 camry. If there aren't would the meterial of the pipe make a dif. ?
Yes it would, but its not harmful for little bits of water... it would evaporate upon touching the engine, if not before.
Just don't drive in 2 feet deep water and you'll be fine. (ie do not submerge the opening of the pipe in water when you drive) I don't think that would happen, now would it?

ive seen that green intake on camryman before and read a little about how its cooler than AEM type CAI due to the double painting with i think i a great idea. the only problem is have my v6 is the next gen or its not the 4cylinder im seeing. working at Pennzoil i reconigized the engine, just wondering if anyone has a pic of the CAI v6 95-96. 97-99 is the same v6 i believe too. any pics would do. homemade and aftermarket, just trying to get a better idea. since ive got a 2 chamber flowmaster with a 3" pipe, its about time to slap on a decent intake. gaining hp rather than noise. with the flow i known ive lost ALOT of low end!
