Does the CEL light have to be reset after a repair? (’98 LE V6 dead follow up).

This is a follow up to my original thread: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t189485.html

The starting problem went away (mostly). Anyway, the code was “P0402 – EGR flow excessive”. I replaced the EGR valve yesterday. The code is still there. Does the CEL have to be cleared or should it have gone away if the EGR valve was the problem?

Thanks,

if the egr valve was the problem, the cel should have gone away

but you can try resetting it anyway though- no harm in that

You can shut off the CEL easily. Disconnect the neg battery clamp and remove it for a minute or two. (You will have to reset your radio stations and the clock.) If your fix did indeed work, the CEL will go out and stay out.
