Rear Video Entertainment System?

Well, my thoughts on camry so far have brought me to the same conclusions: It looks pretty good, but its just SLOW. There isn't much to get around that.
But if you can't make it fast, make it loaded.
I'm thinking that instead of ricing it out with body kits, etc that wont matter when im done with the car anyway, and do little for me or my passengers, why not go hi-tech?

I'm thinking of doing some of the following. If you have any ideas, comments, TUTORIALS (hint: I would love these) and pictures... please post them. Thanks Again very much

Rear Entertainment System
- Video Screen
-I Was thinking a cieling mount was the way to go, but it may block my view of the rear view mirror, I will check that tomorrow, any opinions on position in the back seat?
-the video screen WILL be in the back, I distract easily when driving (I'm the guy that pulls into the grocery store parking lot then remembers he was supposed to go to the post office.)
-Wiring scares me a little. A/V connections I could run... but that means taking stuff apart. Haynes Repair manual would be enough? Or something else? Also, how do I get juice from the battery? No electrical experience in a car here!
-PS2/COMPUTER?!?
-Yes I know it sounds far-fetched, but it just so happens I have a computer that might retire soon. Throwing in a TV tuner and DVD player might save me some cash. It already has video out to run to a tv monitor... think that'll work?
-Now where to mount that playstation/computer? I don't like it under the seat... and a computer!? forget it... but that rear fold-out arm rest looks like a great spot. What I'm thinking is, cut the inside of the fold-out into the trunk. Then, make some sort of mount to hold in the ps2/PC vertically and screw it down in the trunk right against that part of the seat. UPSIDES- No floppin around! Looks cool! DOWNSIDES- takes up space in trunk BUT might put subs/amp beside it anyway AND ruins seat AND there was another downside but i forgot it (too tired)
-Power? Can my gen 3 handle a tv screen and computer? What about turning on sound with that? I have an auxillary on my pioneer head unit, so no FM modulator (aka ghetto hook up) needed.

Rear Camera
Just saw this on ebay, a camera and lcd screen. The screen is mounted into a rear-view mirror and the camera goes on the back of the car (somewhere). Just wonder if anybody has thought about this.

Another BIG question is EBAY shopping. I see fairly cheap LCDs that are nice looking ( Example of Good looking one ) What are brands, sellers to stay away from? Good ones? Etc.

Sorry for all the questions, I tried to keep them specific. Thanks to anyone who gives me any kind of help. I'm pretty new here, but if I do go through with this, I will make tutorials and pictures.

- You can get nice LCD units that fit into/replace your front seat headrests. Only namebrand I can think of right offhand is Savv, but they're pretty 'spensive and are more of a whole-unit kind of thing. I get the impression you want to do this piece by piece and by yourself. There are other brands out there, I'm just too tired to remember them right now I've seen just the screen by itself with just a line in, and screens with tv tuner + various inputs. So you kind of have a choice depending on how upgradeable you want to be.

- Your PS2 may fit into your glovebox or center console (armrest in front) with minor modifications. Lots of people have done this on the audio side at my workplace. Typically they're hooking up to a screen that has your standard RCA a/v jacks built into a tuner.

- Putting a PC in your car is tricky, but it can be done. You'll need a good quality inverter to power it and clean up the line cause battery power is dirty. Also, you should invest in a laptop hard disk and maybe contemplate some sort of cushioning mechanism for the drive. Hard disks don't take too well to potholes Don't know what kind of correction you'll get with that dvd drive in terms of jarring bumps. May not work as well as you'd like.

Thank you, putting it in the center console would be cool, but i was hoping for the back-seat pull- out (know what im talking about?) i thought about the hard drive and other components, but my other fear is heat. Trunks can get hot, and it could make a computer overheat quickly. i have a laptop thats getting old too... maybe I could rig that somehow... and it could go under the driver seat... probably use less power too... and it has some sort of audio/video out... eh but i'd prefer to keep that a laptop and not a car computer...

thanks for the help though, keep the comments coming!

As far as the computer thing goes, I've thought of that myself, but never gotten around to actually designing how I'd implement it. Here are some things I decided I'd do, however.

Trunk mounted with possibly a rack case.
Peltier cooling for the cpu instead of standard heatsink+fan. It'd be mounted upside-down to hopefully prevent any moisture from dripping onto the circuit board.
Rack mount is fixed to shock absorbers in such a way that it has limited, cushioned movement in three directions. Essentially hanging and swaying (though damped) from the rear deck in the trunk
Laptop hdd mounted in a pullout tray so I can easily take the drive into the house if I need to work on it or transfer stuff.
I'd probably also run some form of linux on it with Wine so I can get windows functionality
I was planning on building from scratch, so I was going to get a mainboard that had everything built into it so it wouldn't need extra cards for sound etc. Also a laptop power supply for size and heat considerations.

Hope that helps. Retrofitting an old PC may end up being pretty difficult or kind of ghetto in the end. Not trying to dissuade you from doing it, just stating how it appears to me. I'd be interested to hear your feedback

they make systems that have coolers now... i don't remember names but i've seen them. I could buy a better cpu fan and try to find a liquid cooler. Also a liquid cooler for the hard drive. I would stick with Windows Xp... and possibly the way to go here is windows media center edition? I have a wireless mouse and keyboard I can rig up too... and it could go right on the fold out arm rest... anyway, I still don't know where I want to put the screen... I would do the headrest but it looks really tricky...

sorry for the double post, but I was looking at my headrests and im not so intimidated.. running the wire down the seat looks really straight forward, and I think i can do the cutting on the head rest. Maybe I'll try and find a junk yard to get more head rests or something just in case. Anyway, I really need help with planning the wiring. How do I run wire to my stereo and how do I get power from the battery? Help?

IconTV makes some very nice middle budget TFT monitors. Not high end expensive, but not crappy pyle, lilput, or pyramid cheap stuff.
