tranny time!

HEy people whats up well I gotta problem. My car has 110,00 miles on it 5,000 on the engine(rebuilt), and I think its time for the tranny to go bye bye. Now dont get me wrong but I think the tranny could last a lot longer under normal driving, but racing like I do I think its life will be a bit shorter. Now the question is can I rebuild my tranny, get new tranny or swap tranny. Then the obvious follow ups are which one would be better to do, can I swap the tranny for a different(better one), how much for all the options, and where to get the new tranny be it differne tor the same. Thanks guys for ur input!

BTW: With the turbo getting ever so closer to being on my engine I want to make the tranny is in great shap ready to rock and roll, so what other mods besides an LSD and light flwheel should I get for the tranny?

For the price you'd pay for a rebuild (synchos/bearings/seals), you can grab a good condition Solara tranny (double-cone synchros) or a 93+ MR2 Tranny w/ stock LSD... those also have beefy sychros, improved design, and a viscous limited slip, you cant lose.

Anyways, thats my suggestion. My tranny, 92 3VZ 5-spd, is the equivalent of a 91-92 MR2 tranny, and like them, my 2nd gear synchro is about to go to heaven, and the 3rd gear synchro is getting notchy so Im not optimistic about its fate.

Remember if you go with the 93+ MR2 tranny, to make sure to swap your current shift linkages onto it, or else your cables wont fit obviously cause it was designed for RWD orientation.

good info man! im going to look into getting a solara tranny then. car-parts.com has some pretty good listings. my shifter is so loose its retarded, almost makes it hard to drive. it feels very innacurate and it is a little too easy to mis-shift.

Same here... if Im gunning it to redline in 1st, its fucking a challenge and a half to shift into 2nd ! Not to mention putting it into 5th always takes an unusual amount of effort.

Anyways, I got my eyes open for deals....

Yeah, same shit... except the MR2s have shorter gearing which is nice for drag racing and such, but the flat torque of the V6s gives us an advantage over the 3SGTE guys cause they gotta be in the high-RPM band and spoolin' to be in their peak powerband.

Here are some pics I dug up of the 93+ MR2 LSD tranny (E153)

so, you are telling me that tranny right there will bolt up?? dude i dont know what ive been waiting for, i might even have to delay the turbo seeing that i also have these problems you mention (2nd and 5th). it would go over easier with the parents too, seeing as it would be half maintenance upgrade!

Wink

i believe that this "link lever being all wrong" thing you speak of is when swapping an mr2 E153 tranny into a v6 camry the orientation of the tranny is reversed, so the shifter cables are going the opposite way. i dont have first hand experiance with it, but ratko actually said that farther up in THIS THREAD... he said when you use the mr2 tranny, you have to use the old shift levers (that connect the shifter cables to the tranny) from the camry e153 tranny. pay attention!
