Gear Shift Lever is Locked

My 2VZ-FE all of sudden does not go from "Park" to "Reverse" or "Drive" without pressing the manual override button.

When I push the lever button I hear a click coming from my brake pedal........but it will not shift and seems to have locked.

What could be the culprit?

I had the same thing happen to my Gen3 V6 before... not entirely sure what I did but I think I opened the Centre Console /and or did something with the brake pedal area. It was the brake Solernoid or some part in there which engages the shiftlock mechanism. It wasn't an easy job as it was a very tight area and hard to see. Best to have someone hold a flashlight for you cuz it's a very small area to work with.

I think there was something in there that was a bit out of alignment or had a buildup of dirt/grime so I poke around and lube it with some WD40 and it's been fine ever since *knock on wood*

I remembered the frigging dealer wanted an insane amount of $$$ to do it and basically it was a DIY job.

SAME exact thing happened to me too... only my reverse lights stopped working too...
first thing i tried was a new brake pedal switch. that didnt work, cause my original was fine. Then i determined that there was NO POWER going TO the switch. something got messed up in the wiring and that wire must have gotten apart. ANYWAYS, what i did was do MY OWN wiring of power to the switch, fused of course, you dont want to do anything without a fuse...
check that out and let us know how it goes.

but before i figured all that out, I took the shift lock solenoid out and zip tied the locking level into place so it wouldnt lock ever... you can do that if fixing it doesnt work

For now, I am just going to keep on using the override button until I can find some time to tinker with the center console.

I ordered an FSM........so that might shed some light on the wiring of that solenoid.

Thanks.

there are good diagrams for that system in the haynes manual. sometimes they suck, but in this case, they work
