Most new cars are designed to run on up to 10% ethanol blend with gasoline. Any more then this and the fuel system and engine required modifications. Alcohol is best left for drinking and race cars.
25 years ago i lived in Kansas and gasohol (also known as "E10" -about an 90/10 mixture of gas and alcohol) was sold at the pump right alongside the regular kind. There was no difference in performance or engine longevity.
Most cars made today could not run any higher concentration (E85), because the metals, hoses and seals in the engine won't stand up to it and might disintegrate. Since straight alcohol is corrosive for many of the parts in the engine, that's one of several reasons why we can't just all swap straight over by tomorrow.
In Brazil, their cars do run on straight alcohol but they are designed and built to use it. But considering the present Big-oil created mess, its probably worth a try here too.
(While on the subject - Ethanol (grain alcohol) is the kind you can drink, methanol (wood alcohol) the kind you can't -cause it is poisonous and will blind you - something to remember if you ever find yourself lost in an alcohol factory on a Saturday night . )
There's a differance. Gasohol is more detrimental to the fuel system over a long period of time, but there is a 4% performance hit when using it, and a 5-10% economy hit.
