Oil Change Questions

I know how to change the oil but wonder if anyone else carefully pours oil in their new filter before installing it. With my Camrys, the oil filter is vertical so the oil won't pour out when I install the new filter. Seems like oil would be able to get to vital parts quicker if oil was already in the filter. What do you think??? Make any real difference?

I keep hearing about an oil plug washer or gasket and have been charged for it when I took the Camrys to the dealership for oil changes. I've changed my own oil for years and haven't noticed a washer or gasket on the oil plug. Necessary? Something else to charge you for? What's the deal?

your first question is a good one, my opinion is yes it is a good idea to pour oil into the filter before you spin it on. Its a very easy thing to do and there's no doubt the oil is going to get to the parts that much faster. I usually do in fact do this on cars of mine that had vertical mounted or even horizontal filters. Of course on the other camrys besides yours, the filter points down as you screw it on so - obviously you are not going to bother with doing that cause you just cant.

But if you change oil on a warm engine there should be enough residual oil left on the bearings to protect them for the short time there is no oil pressure. After a change it should take only a few seconds for the oil to reach them, and the drainback valve is supposed to hold the oil in the filter after that - and there's nothing you can do about the slight delay anyway unless you want to spend $200 to buy and install an engine pre-oiler.

2. I think you can get by without the drain plug washer, if you must. Most cars i have owned and/or changed the oil on, did not have any washer at all, not even OEM. But I've also seen more than one drain plug weeping oil, so its a good idea to use the washer just as a general practice. The washer is used on the Camry, so I use them and replace em when they break.

My Camry uses the copper washer. I have also seen a cardboard-material type OEM washer used on my Solara V6. But these are only good for a couple changes before they disintegrate. At which time, just replace it with a copper ditto. I just bought a bunch of the copper washers and change em when they break after being crushed one too many times.

One copper washer is good for several oil changes, i change them when they crack or leak and not before. They will flatten some with use but that is what they are supposed to do anyway, so as long as the copper washer is intact and you don't notice any leaks, the washer is still good for however many changes it will hold up to.

These washers do not have to be anything special or Toyota-only or anything like that: a copper washer from Home Depot is just as good as anybody else's. Plus you can get a handful, which should be a lifetime supply, for a buck or two.

"But if you change oil on a warm engine there should be enough residual oil left on the bearings to protect them for the short time there is no oil pressure."

Once again i have to agree with Marc on the above statement.

I would have to disagree with the statement below:

"I think you can get by without the drain plug washer, if you must."

Maybe if you really must, and have no other choice, but I would then watch the oil level and check the ground under the car periodically for drips. I would buy another washer to put on at the next oil change. To me it just isn't worth the risk to go without a washer. I use the Toyota OEM fiber washers. I change them every 2 years or so, which for me is about 8 - 10 oil changes. As a side note, there is a right and a wrong way to put the Toyota fiber washers on the car. There is a smooth side and a slightly rougher side. The smooth side goes toward the pan. This prevents it from sticking to the pan when the oil drain bolt is removed. A good friend, who is a former Toyota tech, showed me that. I never really knew there was a difference in the 2 sides until I looked carefully.

Mike

Cool

I don't, nor know of anyone else that does.
There's no point on a daily driven engine that's not stresses. Only about 25% of the overall oil flow goes through the filtration loop anyways.

You can change to a dry sump system if you want. Or a charged oil system. Good luck with those tho.

Filling the filter with oil should help. The filler plug normally has a washer, look closer when you change the oil. Make sure the washer did not stick to the pan when the plug was removed. If you don’t find it Toyota or an auto parts store will have them.
