2nd Generation Auto to manual tranny conversion, and clarification please

Update: Anyone know for sure if the crossmembers, etc. are the same between I4 and V6 on Gen 2 manual Camry's? I expect the rear trans mount is probably different. Anything else (other than listed below)? Would save me a lot of time if someone can answer. Otherwise I will have to strip both cars and compare everything before I can go get the trans & fly from the wrecker. TIA.

Also, still looking for someone that can send me a saved copy of Ratko's swap page. His site is gone.

------
I am starting the conversion from auto to manual, on a 90 Camry V6 wagon. Thanks to lots of great info in the archives, this will be a much more straightforward project. This will be a transpo car, and probably won't be modded, so I'm going with the E52/53 trans since they are readily available. Since this particular swap has not been documented, I'll take a bunch of pics, and do a write up others can use.

Hopefully someone can answer a couple of specific questions on the parts, so I can make just one trip to the wreckers (long drive away), and save some cash: The donor car is a 91 I4 5spd. The recipient is a 90 V6 auto. The archives indicate all the interior parts (console, pedals, switches, shifter & cables, etc) are the same between the I4 and the V6.

However, I would like some confirmations as to whether I can use most of the underhood parts from the I4 on the V6. Specifically, the master, slave, hardlines, and the rear trans mount. In addition, I am wondering if the flywheel, clutch (PP), clutch disc, and throwout from the I4 are the same (the I4 donor has a recent clutch).

Also, I would like to retain the cruise. Both cars have factory cruise, and the archives indicate (possibly) just switching the cruise brain from the I4 MT would restore the cruise functions.

I will be keeping the auto V6 ECU, and using resistors and a loopback.

Thanks in advance.

p.s. The I4 is in overall great shape, but has a damaged frame. Anything not used will be parted out, so see my FS post if you need parts.

Thanks JetSpeed. Your thread is the definitive guide on the subject, now that Ratko's page is no longer available.

If anyone has a stored copy of Ratko's page, please let me know. I'd like to have a copy of that.

JetSpeed: When you were doing your swap, did you check any of the I4 underhood parts, to see if they were the same as the V6?

I will add info to your thread as I go through this, probably in a week or two.

See if the part numbers are the same by searching various on-line vendor websites such as www.rockauto.com.

Good tip, thanks. I had heard of RockAuto, but somehow never got around to using that site.

It shows the master, slave, and hose are the same 89-91 (only years I checked) I4 (3SFE) and V6 (2VZ). This is as I suspected. Hardlines are therefore probably the same too.

It shows the clutch is different. 89-91 I4 = 225mm 20 spline, V6 & '4x4' (All-Trac) = 236mm 21 spline. This also means the flywheel is different (larger contact area, different splines) The starters are listed as the same for both I4 and V6.

So I guess I have an I4 flywheel & clutch to add to my FS list, and I need to buy all that for the V6 MT conversion. Ouch. Quite expensive. Wreckers want 75 - 150 for the fly, and clutch is around $225 new incl pp, disc, TOB, and tool. In addition to about 5 bills for the E52/53 (not specified which) trans - according to the parts locator. Good thing both cars were free, and V6 recipient was recieved with all maintenance done, new brakes, fluids, tires, battery, shocks, etc.

Trans mounts are not listed, so I'll have to pull the I4 trans first (actually motor/trans together since I am parting the donor), and bring the part with me to the wrecker to compare. I would expect the trans mount is not the same. I will probably have to take a huge box with me too, including all the fasteners, crossmembers, and anything else that touches the trans. Then strip the wrecker's donor for the needed bits. I'll make a comprehensive list of what is the same and what differs, and add all this info to a new thread, linked to JetSpeed's thread. Hopefully this will ease someone elses swap later.
