Question Sputtering after warm-up, Stalling, Hard Re-Start

Hi all.. my first post !!

I've read through most of the posts here re: my problem, it seems as though it's usually caused by a defective ignition coil.

I've looked around, read the Clymers but nothing is giving specifics regarding coil replacement.

My Clymers shows the V6 and I'm with a 4cyl.

The distributor must be removed, a paint hash mark will suffice for re-installation alignment, there may or may not be an internal cover... that's basically all I've found.

What I need to know is what to buy before I pull the distributor.

1) I know I need the coil, are some brands better than others ?
2) Is there some seals, gaskets, or ?? In or around the distributor that need replacement as well ? I read somewhere that there's a seal/? under the coil that dries out ?

I already have new plugs, plug wires, and cap/rotor.

Want to keep this job focussed on just the problem, but dont want to create any new ones along the way.

Any advise appreciated.

I recommend that you get the coil from a Toyota dealership.

I've heard from other gen 2 Camry owners that non-oem ones from Autozone, Kragens, etc... are not as good, don't last as long, and the specs are alittle off.

I ditched the stock coil on my 88 Camry from a msd blaster ss coil and msd 6a box.

Distributor o-ring. Might as well replace it since your going to have the distributor out anyways.

Gasket between distributor and distributor cap / wire set. You can reuse this or get a new one.

Gasket underneath the coil.

Thanks for the advice.

None of these things are recommended (or even mentioned) in my Clymers.

I'll put the extra's on my shopping list too.

Another Question
Is there an online or other source for the OEM coil, or must I get it from the dealer ?? I have a feeling it'll be a bit pricie there.

Finally....

I've finally got around to replacing that coil !!

Got a Borg/Warner coil from PepBoys for $36, kept it in the box in my back seat for two weeks or more.

Finally pulled the Camry up to the garage yesterday and pulled out the distributor.

Note to others with this problem:
1) Do buy the new coil mounting seal that fits between the coil and the distributor body.
2) Do buy a new distributor shaft seal (o-ring).

Both these parts are rotton and fall apart during inspection. The shaft seal may "look" good, but it's hardened state will definately cause a new oil leak if not replaced.

The old coil was indeed cracked. I've never seen such a thing !! It's cracked from the center of one side, all the way across the bottom, and through to the center of the other side. Very visable track marks where the leakage was going on.

Replaced the coil on the bench, new rubbers installed, re-installed the distrubutor to the previously scribed marks.....

She's restored to 100% running !!!

Thanks to all of you that contributed to this post.
