If you can stay with the factory R12 I would do it. There are things in an R134 retrofit kit that do not always mix well with existing residues in the system (have to have all the old R12 purged) and may not work right with an R12 compressor/evaporator/etc. Nothing cools like R12 and if you can stick with it I would.

i dont believe you can even buy r12 anymore. however they do make a reasonable substitute called Autofrost that may be cheaper than a complete r134 retrofit. First you should find the cause of your AC not working, be it a blown fuse or a leak that let out the refridgerant in the first place...because buying a couple cans of the stuff to recharge the system would be a waste of money if its just going to leak out in a day or two.

OP,
Before you attempt to add or change the refrigerant, verify that the cause of your problem is not something else such as a bad fuse, bad clutch on the compressor , or a broken or disconnected wire.
