Transmission Noise??? Any GUESSES???

The weirdest thing happened to my Gen 4.5 ('01) the other night:

I was in a fierce rainstorm and I was going about 60mph and all the sudden my auto transmission started grinding and it wouldn't change gears.....everytime I would speed up above 60 the grinding would get even louder. On top of that, with the slightest bump, it would feel like something was loose underneath the car and lightly banging against the bottom of the car.

All this was during the rainstorm, once I got out of it......the car ran fine for 600 more miles with no problems.....but everyonce it awhile if I hit a big bump, I will still hear a sound like something is loose underneath the car, but I check and everything looks intact.

Is the "wet" transmission thing normal? What about that noise underneath the car, anyone else heard that before?
