Arrow HELP: Serious Transmission Problems

Please, HELP ME, I beg of you all! My auto-transmission is going out on me!

As if you did not already know, here is the low-down on my ride:

*1994 Toyota Camry
*Trim Level: LE
*Engine: i-4 (5SFE)
Mileage: 116,589 Miles and still going strong (considering that I address the transmission problems before it gets much worse)...
*No "REAL" transmission work, besides having a trusted shop do some occasional "normal transmission labor".

*NO, I am not going to just sell my car, so please don't suggest it. IT IS MORE THAN WORTH IT TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. Thanks.

* I am OPEN to suggestions, I don't know what I should do, and I hope you guys can help, I NEED OPINIONS AND I NEED TO KNOW MY OPTIONS SO I CAN MAKE AN EDUCATED DECISION! What should I do try to go manual or stick with an auto? After-market? Or out of a MR2 or Solara? Used, New, or Refurbished? From who/where? How do I get it here? How hard is it going to be for my local performance transmission shop to install it for me? (i.e: if the transmission costs $500 (shipped), I only will have $500 left for labor fees / and other necessary parts/adaptors.

*** I HAVE $1,000 TOTAL, to spend on the transmission, that has to include the cost of labor time, and any shipping and handling charges that may be incurred in buying a new transmission. ***

The current transmission's low-down:

1. All electronics and sensors are in good condition.

2. The mechanical aspect of the transmission is fucked. The DISCS ARE SLIPPING! It needs to be rebuilt or tossed out. The amount of shavings/shit/clutch material present will eventually lead to a useless transmission (I prefer tossing the slush box, and replacing it with something that has somewhat better-performance.) I would like to get something that will fit in without a TON of modifications to the existing stock set-up. I do realize however how much labor is involved with this process, regardless of transmission maker, but the less labor the better.

I do not feel that I personally have enough experience to take on the task of swapping a transmission on my own. That is why I am going to be taking it in, and labor hours cost $$$!

3. Even if I did get it rebuilt, I think the work will be so extensive and expensive, why not go and get something better then trying to build this slush box back to working condition?

I am going to be embarking on the process of acquiring a NEW T R A N S M I S S I O N ! I hope something good can come out of this, I am so grateful for my parents being able to back me up some on the funding of this process this time around, and I am also grateful for all who may be able to help me with my dilemma!

Thank you so much for any and all information that you may be able to provide to me!

Sincerely,
Brandon Mendez

i dont know about any type of swaps that are possible im sure some of the guys on here do, but if u want to go the cheapest route possible buy a used transmission and have that installed the labour hours shouldnt be any more than 7 or 8 hours, if u do have it rebuilt find out how long of a warranty u get with it i think the most u would get is a year, bottom line is that its gonna be expensive try a smaller shop and see if they can do something for u for cash, if u go to a dealer ur gonna pay large

I am going though "Doug's Performance Transmission," via. a referral from my guys over at "A-1 Japanese Auto Service" They estimated 7.5 Hours at $70 bucks an hour; which brings me to $525 US-green ones. I was leaning towards swapping used due to the price savings. What tranny should I get? Suggestions? Any help / comments / info / opinions are greatly appercieated!

my 92 has 127,000

92 le 4 cyl and i'm having the same problems.. On some board i read that the auto clutch wears away cause its rubber? Or has rubber bearings or soemthing? I dunno, I'm not well educated on the auto clutch, something with discs/fans and liquid. But anyway i got an estimate on a refurbished trans today because eventually i'll need one. 1200$. I know you don't have the money but this problem occurs for most at around that mileage cause i've heard a lot of complaints. If you go used, get low mileage or else your still droppin about 500$ on a tran that will only last you two years. I'm planning on getting a brand new one so I won't have to worry about it again. Can't do anything about labor. $70 is pretty average hourly. That's about what i usually pay. Get your money's worth out of all that labor.

me 2

well yeah, my tranny went bad about a month ago, od housing and everything else was shearded and metal was throughout my entire transmission, a new tranny was gonna cost me about $2900 but thats total price, labor, parts and everything else. i wasnt about to spend $3k on a car dats worth $3k. so i decide to get used parts cuz i wasnt gonna sell the, it ended up being $1600 wit good used parts to rebuilt my transmission. so i suggest you find used parts to keep cost down. (my tranny went bad on me at 153000 miles, 1992 camry le i4, in 1998 had some work done on the tranny but notin big. )

Do you really think I should go and just rebuild the slush-box?

I think that I should try to get something that will be reliable for another 2-3 years... but I dunno what I should do!?! Do they sell extremly low-mileage trannys for the 5SFE anywhere???

you buy a rebuilt one, give them your old one so it gets rebuilt, like alternators, starters, axles...... you get your core value back

BRand NEw

Sorry. In My post when i said brand new i meant rebuilt. That's all you'd find for a 92. I used to drive a 91 tempo and bought everything rebuilt through ford parts stores and saved a shitload of money due to core value. You get one rebuilt and your money back for your messed up one. They don't rebuild yours. I forgot that option for osem reason but i'd say its a no brainer. Get a rebuilt and give them your core. You get a long lastin tranny + get money for your junked one. If you get one from a junkyard you lose labor to the junkyard for removing, lose labor for install, and you have a worthless tranny on your hands. Rebuilt!!!

I dont mean to be pessimistic here but I dont think you'll be able to find a transmission plus labor and any additional parts for under $1000. And if you do, I'd be a littel skeptical of it.

Take a look on ebay. If I'm not mistaken you have a A140E, like myself.

Take a look at this also Phoenix Hard Parts.

cores

You can go to any local repair shop and they'll do it for you... when ever you go to a repair shop they do it anyway u jsut never hear about it. I'm not sure if they discount your core value or not but you'd ask them. if $$$ is an issue than your screwed. If your looking for quality, get a rebuilt tranny from a local shop. AVOID the toyota dealers cause then you have like 5 middlemen all gettin paid which is why dealer's are so expensive. I wouldn't reccomend a purchase off of ebay or any internet site because tranny's are heavy and shipping would be unbelievably high. Go to a local shop, get a rebuilt tranny, and make surethey don't screw you over with the core value.
