stalling at stoplights...

The other day I was driving my bro's gen 3 I4 Camry, and I get to a stoplight and the car just stalls... it only stalled 2 times in about 5 lights. My bro said its been happening for a while. Argh. Reminds me of the time he told me to take his Camry even though he knew the brake line was leaking .
Anyways, after searching of the forum I want to conclude the problem is the ignition coil. The car kind of lags after you take your foot off the gas. Anyone else have any ideas?

I had almost the same problem on my 94 i4.. I had the dealer run diagnostics, they said I had a weak ignition coil, but they couldn't get it to stall and die at the shop. I let them put in a new coil, since they already had the car. I drove 1000 miles on a road trip, it stalled twice. Check out my thread: http://www.toyotanation.com/showthre...threadid=17852

I'm considering taking oldman's advice and returning it to the dealer for a "free" checkup. Hope this helps.....

Not trying to sound like a smart@$$, but stalling is when your engine dies, usually for no apparent reason, without you physically turning off the key to stop the engine. In a 5speed, you usually stall by letting out the clutch too fast. I, on the other hand, have an automatic, so I couldn't do that to my car. In my case, it stalled at idle (like stop lights) or rarely when i was actually driving. Try turning a dead car down 20mph, praying that you don't become good friends with that concrete divider...

Do you stall because your stopping? Or when the light turns green it stalls because you hit the gas? Well my friends car when he hit the gas his car stalled because he needed a new O2 Sensor...

car probably just dosen't like warm idle, here's a few things, fuel filter? ignitor, wires, plugs

the idle air bypass might be all clogged up, could spray a bunch of throttle body cleaner

my friend had the same problem, so i took out all the spark plug and found out that the valve cover gasket was leaking oil....and it was flooding the combustion chamber with oil (it went in through the spark plug thread) so i took out all four spark plug and started the engine for couple of crank.....put the spark plugs back in and didn't stall for couple of weeks....then i changed the gasket and working great......

How much oil was your friend's engine leaking? I know I need a new valve cover gasket, but it doesn't leak a noticeable amount. In my case, it was when I was slowing down/stopping.

My gen1 camry automatic had a problem like this. Every single time I would come to a complete stop it would stall so I had to pop it in nuetral just before I stopped. It turned out there was several causes. One was that the air intake hose was cracked half-way through. When the car's RPMs were up, the engine leans over slightly, and this was crimping up the cut in the hose so that it ran fine. When the car returned to idle speed and the engine dropped back down, the tear in the intake hose opened up and the sudden change in airflow stalled the engine. I was also experiencing a power loss and a new cap and rotor fixed that. I'm not sure if the worn rotor had anything to do with the stalling as well, but after fixing those things it worked great and I could peel it out once again.
