I have a 94 camry. My check engine light goes on and off regularly. Its on for abt 20-30 miles and then goes off and remains off for 20-30 miles and then comes back on. Its totally random. Sometimes it off, I par the car for few mins and when I restart it, its on.
I have taken it to couple of mechanics...they checked for codes but didnt get any. They said it was ok and just reset the battery..which temporaily made it go away.
Any suggestions?
Esp..I am planning on selling it. I dont think anyone will buy it with a check engine light
When you brought it to the mechanics, was the check engine light on or off? Try bring it to Auto Zone when the light is on, since they can check it for free.
If you car has the 4 cylinder 5SFE engine you can read the code yourself. If it is the 6 cylinder engine, I believe that was already OBD2 back in 94 and Autozone should be able to read the code for you. Tell the people at Autozone the 6 cylinder Camry engine was already OBD2 back in 94. Someone will correct me on that if I am wrong. If it is the 4 cylinder, download the Toyota factory service manual sticked at the top of this forum and look in the "Emission Control" section. It will have the procedure for reading the codes of the 4 cylinder engine. All you need to read it is the manual and a piece of wire.
i have the same problem with my 94- theirs a recall on some v6' check engine lights i dunno why. whenever mines comes on, i tap the plastic odometer cover hard and it goes off and stays off. keeps that check engine light in check. i wouldnt bother with it unless you wanna take apart your dash and unplug the check engine light connector
I dont know if this is a horse that has been beaten quite a few times but, I have a 94 camry v6 and tried the jumper on both the under the dash connector and under the hood connector and I cant get the light to flash. Auto zone told me they dont have connector to check codes. Any suggestions besides taking it to a mechanic and blow 90 bucks?
Go back to Autozone and tell those nimrods that despite the fact it's pre '96 (when OBD II was required), it is OBD II compliant. As Mike Gerber mentioned in this thread, most '94 & '95 Camrys with the V6 were compliant before it was required. Look for the plug behind the flip-down door, down and to the left of the steering wheel.

I found that plug which the housing is kinda round but those knuckle heads dont know any better. Dont know what else to do and the freaking car died on me ones while driving.
Round?... that's not the ODB connector; that's some other diag port for I-dunno-what. There's a D-shaped connector behind the flip-down-door-thingy I mentioned. Looks like the image on this site. Find it, and if you have to, lie to the Autozone guy and tell them it's a '96 to get them to get off their duff and read the code.

If necessary, go to the link that BMR has suggesterd and print out the section showing the 94 Camry was OBD2 compliant, and take that with you to Autozone.
