Climate Control & Ashtray Lights

So not to long ago half the light on my climate control went out. Its still somewhat lit up but its much dimmer than it was before. Like the Air Speed and Temperature dial are the same but the air direction is much dimmer. I used to be able to hit that side abit and it would come back on but not any more. The ashtray light is also burned out.

So I took it apart to see If I could do anything, like fix a loose wire or something, but it was a bust and I couldn't get the entire thing out cause of a green wire and the wire that controls weather or not to take in outside air or recirculate the inside air. I didn't want to break anything so I just gave up and let it be.

I know its not that big of a deal but how much do you think it would cost to get it fixed?. It's just kind of a pet peeve of mine. Its my first car and all and I got it like 10 months ago and now it doesn't work. Its a 99 Camry LE w/ ~99k miles on the clock. Is this a problem w/ Camry's or something?

If your climate controls are similar to mine (a 2000) the "green wire" is probably the plastic wrapped cable that controls the air temperature, it runs back to an arm right next to where your right calf is when your foot is on the gas. You have to kind of reach in there. It's most likely what's preventing you from removing the whole unit. I went through the same thing after I had some repairs done to my car, turned out the little lights had just slipped out of the socket and were basically illuminating behind the dash.

Anyway, you can easily remove that cable from the arm it connects to next to your foot. It's just a loop of metal that lifts off a sort of arm. Doing so allows one to pull the whole hvac control assembly farther out to mess with the controls.

Hope that all makes sense.

my climate controls don't work at all... well they work but the lights out at night and i can't see them... and i have a 92 camry... i guess toyota can't be perfect at everything... The camry has to have some miscues.
