Angry Poor Gas Mileage!

Question regarding poor gas mileage on a 2006 camry se 4cyl. I have had this car leased new 2 yrs. ago. I have never been able to get more than 15 miles per. gal. in the city and around 28 on Hwy. I have written to toyota. Got a response that they noted the problem but had no cure. They said it usually is because of poor driving habits by me. Anyone else have this problem?

28 on highway is not bad, about average. Camry is not a subcompact, it is a relatively heavy car, and the engine is fairly large for a 4 cylinder. I do not think there is anything wrong with the car. If you want to try to squeeze out a few more miles then consider using mobil 1 and removing any excess weight if you are carrying any (on the car not you lol)

City driving mileage as a rule is usually going to be terrible. Stop and go driving is very tough on the car and the mpg. You do constant idling and about a million stops and starts, then why wonder that you are only getting 15 mpg.

Maybe you should consider a Toyota Prius if mileage is your goal - like i said there's probably nothing wrong with the car or your driving habits.

You didn't say how fast you drive on highway. Consumer Reports tested 2005 4 cyl automatic Camry at various highway speeds and got:

40 mpg @ 55 mph
35 mpg @ 65 mph
30 mpg @ 75 mph

Cool Habbits

Just to clarify my driving habits. When I drive the HWY. I set the cruise at 69 & don'y vary off that speed. It is usually a trip from Springfield Il. to Milw. Wi. about 300miles each way.
As far as my city driving . I live in Springfield IL & there aren't allot of stop lights on Veterans HWY I weight 180lb. 5'6" I don't have a lead foot so I don't speed away from stop lights.
I had the car into Toyota today for Oil Change & tire rotation. I mentioned the losy city mileage & their sugestion was to let them keep the car for a couple of days & hook it up to the computer to see what is going on. I told them I was in the last year of my lease & when I have 2 months left on lease I will bring it in & see if they can correctthe problem, If they can I have the option of buying the car. I told them I would consider buying only if they can improve the gas mileage for the city driving.

Don't forget to calculate the head winds as well, it might be a critical factor.

You are unhappy with the gas mileage you are getting so like i said, maybe you should consider a Prius. Your gas mileage would probably double at least. Also it is almost as roomy inside as a Camry but not as much pep, i drive them all the time at work and they are ok. On long trips the shorter wheelbase might make the ride a little less enjoyable. But if i were you, i'd consider getting a Prius next time instead.
