Exclamation Gen. 2 drum-to-disck conversion underway!

Alright guys, after researching and reading up a bit about converting the rear drum brakes to disc brakes, plus having plenty of printed out how-to's and all the materials I need, I'm going to be undertaking this little project. I know it may not exactly sound like much, but then again, it's yet another step made for the gen. 2ers out there.

Oh, and don't worry. I'll be taking pictures of the whole process as well! Stay tuned for updates!

Cool

Xavior66, my man...

Good luck to you on your upgrade.

Any work you do to your car is significant, regardless of the work performed.

I plan to do the same to my 88 soon. Like you have done, I'm getting my info together to do it over a weekend.

Let us know how you make out...

That should give you an idea about how I feel right now.

Anyway, as promised, an update on the conversion for now:

Well, after removing the rear drum assembly and installing the disc rotor and hub on, I was just beginning to put on the caliper mounting bracket, and it was a pain to screw in those 2 annoying bolts that mount it (cuz they never wanna go all the way into the thread holes, so you have to jiggle 'em like crazy for 'em to go in!)

Well anyway, I had the car supported on a jack. Now before I go any further, let me get one thing straight here-when they say don't use a jack for anything other than changing a tire, THEY MEAN IT!!!!!!!! Why? Well, my dog was being a little too playful with me as I was installing the caliper mounting bracket bolts, and being as frustrating as those lil bolts are to get in, I got mad and kicked the dog away. But that wasn't the only thing I kicked............................................ ..............................

Yes, you guessed right, and I'm sure you know what also happened after that..............I accidentally kicked the jack and it slide right from under the car, causing it to fall, and in doing so, I ended up putting a rather big "bent dent" in the rotor!!!!!

So yeah, basically I'm out a rotor. But then again, it could've easily been my leg as well, so for that much, I'm thankful. However and unfortunately, I'm gonna have to put a hold on this project until I can get another rotor (yeah, it messed it up that badly).

Now it wouldn't be such a big deal, but then again, I spent most of my money on gathering the parts I needed, and it'll be at least another week until I can get my next paycheck. But rest assured people, I *will* finish this. I have taken pictures, but not all yet, so I'm gonna wait till I can get another rotor this next week so I can finish off the film left. And now that you guys mentioned it, I'll do a how-to on it when I get done.

I'm seriously sorry for the delay guys. I know, it's annoying. This next time I'll use jack stands (I know a guy I can get some from). Until then, just bear with me and be patient!

If you dont have jackstands, concrete blocks or a block of wood should be used in conjunction with the jack.

What I did before I had a set of jackstands was to jack the car up and lower it onto a concrete block with a small piece of wood ontop, distributing the weight as evenly as possible between the block and the jack.

Even with the jackstands, I still leave the jack under the car.
