I intend to have a transmission flush done on my 2004 Camry I4. The fluid has not been changed at 31K and 3 years. The dealer wants $209.99 (he claims the fluid alone costs $139). Do you think this is reasonable, or are there suitable alternative (and less expensive) sources for this service? Thanks- Richard W. in SF Bay Area.
That is not reasonable. The fluid does not cost $139, it shouldnt cost anymore then $50 at the absolute most, since alot of places will drain and refill for much less then that (of course they are only filling about 1/3 of it that way, but w/e).
I paid about $150 from Toyota when I got my '94 Camry flushed out, and that was the most expensive place I found. Many other places where charging $99.
the toyota type IV ATF is expensive abt 4 to 5 bucks a quart I guess. You don't need a flush. Just drain & fill. that will take abt 5-6 quarts at most.
As previously stated, there is no need for a flush -- only a drain and refill. We have a 2005 Camry LE 4 cyl. with the newer 5 speed AT. Around the top of the AT dipstick is a printed message that says "this fluid NEVER (?) needs to be changed". I haven't contacted Toyota about this -- maybe some of you could explain to me why it NEVER needs to be changed? Anyway, since 'never' is a very long time, I still intend to change it someday --like around 60k-70k miles.
Your car needs toyota TIV fluid and it is a dealer only. It is 4 or 5 bucks a qt. You can buy the 10 mm male hex socket for 5 or 10 bucks more. Your transmission has a drain plug exactly like the oil change and this would be plenty good enough for me (and the car) especially since you have low miles. There's No math tutoring needed here, to me.
Hi guys- I finally had the transmission flush done at the local Toyota dealer, Walnut Creek Toyota, for a "special" price of $164.95. I feel comfortable with this dealer, having bought three Camrys there, even though they are a bit expensive on service. But then, everything is expensive in the SF Bay Area! Regards- Richard

Well you got it flushed by the dealer so hopefully they used the right fluid, even though theres no way to tell. Since it made you feel better then thats ok, but like i said i think a simple fluid change would have been sufficient at your low miles and you would have saved $100 or so. But thats just my own opinion so hopefully your Cam will go on for a million miles now as i can spot another like-minded over-maintaining fanatic like myself a mile away lol.
jmonez what about the special transmission fluid? It uses TIV fluid - a dealer only - straight up, are you telling me they are going to send somebody to the dealership to buy this fluid special or will they just use whatever is in the machine?
