problem with reverse light

whenever i hit the brakes whenever i'm driving, the reverse light on the dash comes on. right after i release the brakes, the reverse light switches back to the drive light. anyone know what the problem is???

My first inclination is to ask if you have replaced any of the tail lamps just before this started? If so, maybe (I admit it's a big maybe) you put in one that fit the base but was incompatible with the system. Check the manual for the right type...

Second thought is that somewhere along the wire loom a wire for the reverse bulbs and a wire for the brake bulbs have chafed and shorted out. When you put on the brakes a jolt of current goes into the reverse wire and may light up the display. I would think that you could test that with a volt meter and or an ohm meter. By the way, when this happens can you have someone check to see if your reverse tail light bulb(s) come on? That might tell you some more.

reverse lights on the dash? Not the 'rear reverse light'? The 'shifter' reverse indicator on the instrumental cluster/dash, right?

The reverse indicator lamp in the console appears to be wired to the backup light circuit. There could be a cross connection between the brake circuit and backup circuit feeding power to the reverse indicator lamp. Check wiring.
