DRL's and HID

I have a gen5 (2002 to be exact) Camry and I was wondering; is it possible to have the DRL's *on* in conjunction with the low beam lights? I'm going for an effect similar to the Lexus GS (see attached pic). When I install HID lighting I would like to have the DRL's on with the HID's, for color contrast/safety purposes, and just because I think it would look cool. I realize that the light emitted from the GS is probably from a wedge bulb, but I would rather not drill holes in my headlight housing to hook up a street light kit. Any advice or input?

I actually want to do that as well, but I haven't had the time to figure it out. I'm going for the same effect as my signature, but that's with the high beams on.

If I do figure it out, I'll let you know!

try finding the correct reisister, if u can drop the voltage enough u can half the bulb run at like 1/4 power and that will give the effect.

Yeah, a resistor may be the only option. The only drawback to using a resistor is losing the high beam function.

Actually, by using relays and diodes in combination with your resistor idea, you will be able to keep your high beams.

Wire it up so that when you turn on your low beams, the relay will switch on power from the battery directly to your resistor pack. The diode will sit at the junction between your resistor pack and your existing high beam wiring.

Electrically speaking, what you want to accomplish is a pretty simple task, but I imagine you'll have more of a problem finding electronics with the correct tolerances to pass the kind of amperage that headlights require. For example, don't expect to use Radio Shack resistors, unless you've got a handful of them heatsinked and wired up in parallel (parallel? is that right?).

Good luck finding the right parts, post pics when you're done. =)

Actually the GS look comes from a sepearte 194 bulb in the high beam housing. Just drill a 1/2 inch hole and stick a bulb and socket in there.
