I bought this car cause as everyone knows, Toyotas are reliable, well made and last a long time. I'm predicting many years with this gem. A 99 Camry with a 4cyl and a 5sp.
Anyways, I've been doing some routine maintenance. I went to the local dealer and asked the parts guy for a fuel filter cause I had this small stutter during acceleration. "We never change them" What?! I couldn't believe it. They didn't even have one in stock!!. So I got one at AutoZone. I changed it, the air filter, pcv, plugs, wires and the transaxle fluid. The stuttering is gone. She drives like a champ. (I changed the plugs and wires at the same time and one of them fix the stutter.)
So far I'm impressed by the design. I've driven Volvos ( the old ones ) for years. These cars are real easy to work on and feel so much better than those old tanks.
Questions: The car didn't come with the keyless entry key fob. Do I have to go to the dealer for it? Any aftermarket options? I also need some mats. I bought some at AutoZone when I was there but they don't fit well. Any ideas?
I'd go to a good auto stereo/alarm installer for the key fob thing. It's mostly a matter of wiring and you want someone who knows his ass from his elbow. My personal preference would be for an independent shop that has been around for a while. Places like Best Buy may be cheaper but the quality of the installers can be hit or miss. Some of the installers are legends in their own minds only.
I'd try Ebay for the mats.
Hmmm. OK. Actually this car came with some kind of after marker alarm system. There's a little red toggle switch near the hood release lever which I keep in the 'off' position. I guess I'll go to the advised independent shop. I know nothing about alarms. I really don't even want the stupid thing. Rolling up the windows and locking the car is a ritual I don't want to deal with. I check out eBay for the mats. Thanks.
I bought the car from a dealer up in Mass. They were asking 5500. I offered 4000 and got it for 4300. I always ask the seller, business or private, how long they've been trying to sell the car. They had this one for a while and the guy thought it was cause it's a 5 speed and most Camry buyers want automatics. Of course I wanted it exactly because it's a 5 sp. It had 139K when I bought it at the beginning of June and it just turned 144k. I go to Shea Stadium a lot in the Summer to see The Mets.
The seller also told me the 5 speed cars are 'rare'. That's a strange word to use when talking about Camrys but I have yet to see another 5 speed when walking by one in a parking lot or whatever.
Yep you were very lucky, very few of us have 5spds i4 or v6, so you definitely got yourself a jewel there. I'm glad to hear you are enjoying your purchase, take good care of it and it will last you a long, long time
I've had a bunch. Almost all have been 240 wagons. My wife still has a 93 940 wagon I'll probably replace next year with something Japanese. I had an 850 wagon for a few months a few years back. It was in excellent shape. I just didn't like the way it drove and Camrys are better made and have fewer problems. Those newer Volvos aren't like the old ones. There is a reason Toyota is now or soon will make more cars per year than even GM. They make very good cars. Like any one reading this doesn't know that.
I must go, Paul Lo Duca just hit a 3 run homer. Awesome.
Congrats, I also have a 99 with a 5-speed and 4 banger. I left the Honda family after many Accords. The Camry is much easier to work on,parts are cheaper, and I've had less problems. I've thought about changing the fuel filter also. I replaced wires, plugs, pcv too and the engine idles so smooth you don't know its running.
I bought the mats at the dealer and they ran $70 but they fit perfect and look well made.

It's,

All N/A or a mix of both?
Actually, I'm driving an '95 850 Turbo atm. It's a nice bang for the buck buy because for the same price, the Japanese cars were really old. And turbo is always fun.
These aren't that bad cars imo, just a lot of little nagging issues (which can be easily fixed for the most part).
That's cool if you like the newer Volvos. I don't but whatever. That's why they make different cars.
If anyone decides to change the fuel filter, get the air breather box out of the the way first. It will make the job much easier. Also, be sure to use 2 wrenches on each connection. Gentle. The guy at the dealer told me more than one person has screwed up the line coming into the filter from the bottom. Changing or repairing the line is not something anyone wants to deal with.
