side airbags

I have a terrific 01 Camry LE with 94000 miles that I hope to keep for many more years. Unfprtunately, it is not equipped with side airbags and I was wondering if there is a way of getting them installed. I called Toyota and they said they couldn't do it but are there any other mechanics who can do it out there or kits available? Recently, a co worker suffered a serious injury from a side collision in her 2002 Camry that did not have side airbags, so I'm really motivated to get them. Anyone know whether I can get these installed some place? Thanks

Installing side airbags may be more work (and expense) then you want. Were side airbags offered on a 2001, if not you might be out of luck. If so, this is more then just adding the bag but also a new SRS computer, sensor(s), wiring, etc. Not sure a third party would take on this work do to liability issues.

If the 2001 did offer a side airbag suggest you attempt to find a parts car that can donate all the parts required to make the change.

2002 was the first year the camry offered side airbags. Adding them to your car would cost you more then replacing your car. I got one of the 1st 02 camrys with the side air bags. It was one of the main reasons I got the 02 instead of the 01. Well, that and I liked the look.

"2002 was the first year the camry offered side airbags."

That is incorrect. I ordered side airbags on my 98 Camry XLE. They were an option that year. I don't know if they were available as an option on any earlier years.

Wow, I learn somthing new every day. Goes to show you how often the sales people talk outa there asses. With my 07 SE, the salesman told me that the SE didn't have fold down rear seats because the JBL sound system needed to have the passanger compartment seald up better! Had to bite my lip not to call him an idot.

It doesnt have fold down rear seats, but it's because of the V-brace, not the JBL system.
