Aftermarket front exhaust

Hi all,

I have an 02 Camry with 175,000 on it. It is by far the best car I've ever owned, but has a front exhaust leak and the dealer wants almost $1100 to replace it (front pipe with cat converter and flex pipe). They are telling me that if aftermarket parts are used the codes can't be cleared. There is no check engine light on at this time, just a noisy front end. I also need a state inspection with an emissions test next month. Has anyone used aftermarket exhaust and were there any problems with codes or emission tests or is this just the dealer trying to rope me in??

Thanks in advance for your help.

More then likely the flex is broken and thats where the noise is coming from. I agree with the dealer and have seen several cases where aftermarket front pipes have been installed, and the cat is so bad, that the service engine light illuminates soon after, for catalyst inefficiency. My recommendation? Have your repair facility verify that the flex is indeed bad, cut the flex out and weld a new flex in. Walker makes the flexes, and they are available through Napa, one of many places. For a good job, figure 250 bucks.
