Year, mileage, engine?
Some possible problems you can check yourself:
-A/C compressor belt - is it loose or slipping?
-Have someone turn on the engine and work the a/c switch; while you listen to the compressor from underneath. You may be able to hear the compressor clutch click on and off. It should turn on and off with the switch and not on its own. If this is whats happening, shut off the engine and check the electrical connections to the compressor and the switch. they may be very dirty, corroded or loose.
-A remote possibility - ignition switch is worn - if you have problems with other electrical components that you didnt mention, this switch might be worn out
-evaporator or condensor assemblies are very dirty and need cleaning with low pressure air (30 or 40 psi). These parts look like miniature radiators and have fins like one too - that need air to pass through them to function. If they're very dirty - it could affect operation
-A/C system needs a recharge and is just a little low on refrigerant. i doubt you have a leak because your air still works sometimes.
