You usually turn it on when you start driving but that doesnt mean you cant turn it on at any time, it takes effect immediately.
Drive with it off and slowly accelerate, now watch how long it takes to shift, almost 1 second. Now drive with the ECT on an accelerate, the shifts will be much quicker like 1/2 second.
yea i just went to pick my aunt and il cousin up. i put the ECT on and damn it shifted nicly. is it ok to have the ECT on all the time. if so then its gonna be on. i wasn't sure if having it on for a long tiem wouldbe bad
Its not bad having it on all the time but it will guzzle a little more gas.

Not all the Camry got this button. So u wont see it on GEN4, cos they install in inside somewhere of the car, that's why when u floor it with GEN4, it seem more powerful than GEN3.
Press it on for racing? It depends, better than u turn it off, but it spend more gas.

ECT = Extra Camry Turbo or Eat Civic Today.
When the ECT is on it holds it in gear longer before it shifts.
I thought turning O/D off resulted in staying in gear longer? man i hate all these doo-hickeys and buttons with the auto tranny, just to make it more like a manual. i just want a 5-speed period.
i thought that ECT allowed you to rev higher before changing gears. good for more umph when passing on highway and more torque. good for power but sucks gas faster.
and that O/D allowed access to a higher gear resulting in better gas mileage during higher speeds. usually you just leave this "on" all the time.
correct me if im wrong. please clear up confusion once and for all.
I thought o/d was a fifth gear added on to an automatic. But it is not a full gear, it serves as more of just a crusing gear. Therefore when you have o/d off than you have only 4 gears with out that 5th gear that acts like a link between 3 and 4. This is probably not exactly the system. But I was almost positive of the o/d adding another gear for the car to go into.
