Engine stutters when accelerating

Hi,

im having some trouble with my Camry '88 sedan, im hoping someone knows whats wrong. Ok, here's my story:

yesterday i took it to a Toyota dealership to have the O ring replaced on the distributer as oil was pouring out like anything. That got fixed ok. They also said that the Throttle Position switch had to be adjusted as it appeared as a fault on the computer, that was done ok - no problem.

I got in the car and drove about 15ks , it drove fine. I decided to take it to the car wash so i could spray off the oil that had collected on top of the gearbox (auto). I sprayed it off till it was clean.

Jumped into the car and thus my problem started, when accelerating the engine would like stutter/cough, i had to really kick it in to get any power out of it (or press the gas gently). Sure it sounds like water must of got in the dizzy. Got home and left the car till the next day. It started fine, and drove fine for about 5 mins then it started to stutter and cough again.
So i took the distributer cap of and cleaned it out (there was a spot of oil in there). Still it coughs and stutters when i push the accelerator. The only way to stop it is to accelerate very slowly, thus taking off much slower.

What i've checked:
- EFI relay is fine
- TPS seems ok, a fraction out i think - would this make much difference?
- Distributer cap is clean and dry
- Air filter is not blocked
- HT leads are clean, dry. Plugs are clean & dry

I really cant think of what it is.. Any suggestions people?

Did you check the rotor, the contacts on the dist. cap, and the coil?

Hmmm.... The only other thing I can think of is the distributor itself or the ignitor.

nup, just replaced the igniter, the problem is still there. Any more suggestions?

Ok - someone has told me that it could be the fuel filter. I've never changed it and it doesnt look like it has (bloody hard to undo too!). So i'll give that a go.

High Tension lead i think.. in other words the leads that connect the spark plugs to the distributer.

geez this thread is ancient.. that car is long gone now, the rear seal went and wasnt worth repairing.. gone through 3 cars since then.. a corolla '89, ea ford falcon, now driving a daewoo nubira '97.. just dont have any luck with cars.

Yeh, spark plug leads is the same thing. I think 'HT leads' is their proper name and would say that on a pack of new ones.
