hey guys, i just got back from the dealer and had a minor tune up + oil change done.. since i bought this car a month and a half ago the steering wheel has been vibrating hard whenever the car is in drive and im dead stopped on the brake.. but if you give it a little gas it'll go away
anyways, while they were doing the tune up i asked them if they could diagnose what the problem was without any extra fee's... the manager said they'll take a quick look at everything...
welp, he came back to me 20 mins later and told me the rear motor mount is broken.. he said the part was in stock and they could do it today.. he also recommended that i should replace it ASAP because right now all the other mounts have more stress on them than normal since the rear one is broken..
he price quoted it without tax at $370
i asked how much the part alone was, he said $199
does this sound about right for the rear motor mount?
or should i bring this car to a local place and get it done cheaper with an aftermarket mount
any comments/suggestions/recommendations appreciated

Motor mounts are expensive. The dogbone mount is $100 or so from a dealer, so no wonder why the rear mount is $199.
I wouldn't use a aftermarket mount. I've seen bad things happen with aftermarket mounts on HonDuh's. The mounting tabs on the block breaks off due to shitty mounts and your left with a motor thats sitting crooked.
well i was thinking maybe someone manufacturered a decent rear motor mount equivalent or better to the quality of Toyota's parts....
oh well i guess ill have to dish out the $370 + tax
thanks anyways

Just buy the mount from a Toyota dealership and take it somewhere else to have it installed or diy.
well.. do you have any idea how long it'd take to change it?
since the part is $199, and its $370 total, thats 170 for labor
it'd only be worth it if i can find a local shop to do it for under 100.. but again it depends on how long it takes to change it

havent posted anything in a while so here's a summary/recap of what ive done...
so i replaced the rear motor mount, and it didnt do shit, still vibrated like a mother...
so i got the dogbone and the front motor mounts a couple of weeks ago.. then last weekend i went over my uncles house cuz he has all the tools and a garage, i replaced them.. the rubber on the dogbone was eroded and cracked...
now with both the dogbone and front mounts replaced the car runs smoother when idling in Drive
now i have some more obstacles to attack... engine is leaking oil from various places including the oil pan(although i tightened the bolts to the oil pan, they seemed a little loose), valve seals, valve cover gasket, and maybe others... the radiator(original, 12 years old) needs to be replaced soon
oh and my god damn windshield got cracked at the bottom sometime last week

the funny thing was, when i went to the dealer the other day to get an oil change.. the guy comes back after an hour with all this shit wrong with the car and BLAMED it on me neglecting to change the motor mounts...
he said most of the oil leaks were caused from me not changing the motor mounts... he wanted to charge me $550 to replace both the dogbone and front mount the last time i was there... he came back with my rear sway bar bushes are bad, dist cap O ring leaking oil, valve cover gasket, valve seals, oil pan, "possible other leaks" listed on the receipt.. he also says i need all new mounts and struts.. my CV boots are cracked and one is soaked in oil.. trans needs service.. cooling needs flushing.. needs new radiator... blah blah blah the list goes on
fucking dealers, want to bend me over and fuck me raw everytime i go.. as if life isnt expensive enough
oh and the fucktaint also tried to scare me into doing some of it by saying 'listen, if you dont take care of some of this ASAP you're going to lose the engine'
jackass! like i cant check the oil and add more, as if ALL the oil is going to come out at once! he must think im handicapped
as much as he tried to scare me and list all the problems, i still only left with a $22 oil change
i dont think i ever want to go back to that dealer

i wouldn't...the majority of the stuff wrong with your car you can fix yourself if you got a decent haynes or shop manual and can buy the right tools. That's why I did the mounts myself ($46 for dogbone, $120? for front), and will do the CV boot soon ($17 for one at Kragen). My oil problems I'm not worried about, since I'm pretty damn close to deciding on trying to get a Solara V6 or Eclipse GSX, and its cheaper for right now to dump a quart in than to pay for another expensive repair for a car I'm not gonna keep for much longer.
Back to the mounts briefly, if you undertake the job yourself and have a day or two to play with you could keep the old one and stuff it with 3M Windo Weld, effectively making your shitty rubber factory mount a strong polyurethane solid mount. Keep in mind the stuff takes a day or two (24 hrs at least) to set up hence the time needed. I'm doing this in the spring, fixing a bad mount for 11 dollars and making it better than new seems more practical than blowing 80 bucks on a new mount. Just my opinion tho.
Steve
PS a long time ago there was a post about this, just do a search and you'll find the link with directions to do the mod. I'll post it tonight if nobody finds anything.

Isn't the point of the dogbone engine mount is that is that its somewhat flexible since the engine moves when it runs. If you made the mount solid would impact the ride and put undue stress on the engine mount points
