Putting bigger tires on.. cons?

Ok at the moment I have Yokohama Avid H4 215/45/R17 tires on my car and I was just wondering what the cons would be with putting on 215/50/R17 or 55 depending on what the next increment is

My car is lowered but not enough.. so this will fill the fender gap a bit more + make the ride smoother + probably help with saving the mags from being bent (both mags on the back have been bent a bit)

My speedo will be a bit off.... which way up or down and by how much do you think???

And will it cause my car to accelerate slower?... ie: larger surface area to spin in 1 rotation of the tire.. how negatively will this impact acceleration?

Thanx!!!!

(your speedo will say the oppiset of the size of you tire. you go smaller it will say higher, you go bigger it will say slower

if you go bigger diy.it might accelorate slower

Not sure about Gen3 Cmary, but on my Gen 4, 215/50/17 is closest to stock diameter. 215/45/17 is a bit on the small side (making your speedo show higher speed than the actual) plus it is lower profile.

The 50 size is noticeably higher profile, but not by much. Don't think it will affect your daily driving in terms of acceleration (though you might be able to measure it on the track if you run very consistent times). Get a tire with a rim protector lip to help save your rimes - Continental and Bridgestone I think have them (others may do too).

Additionally, based on a recent discussion here, the 215/50/17 has wider cross section vs. 215/45/17. On the same car and same rims the guy had no issues where I had to put a 5 mm spacer in the rear (we have IS300 rimes 50+ offset). This may be tire brand dependent as well (I got Continental ContiExtremeContact, he had some Bridgestones if I remember correctly)
