How to clean a 9 year old muffler?

I searched the forum, not really much information on cleaning the muffler.

Mines look like these (note these are some I found on the web, I can take pictures and post mines but...why bother?)

I tried scrubbing it when I do my car wash but nothing really comes off, any ideas?
Maybe chrome polish or something?

The case most likely has corrosion damage. Might think about painting it instead.

Is the muffler chrome? I cant tell. There's no point in cleaning a muffler except maybe a stainless steel one, and even then it is doubtful.
If you want to make it look good, i am with toyomoho, i'd just sand or wire brush off the loose rust and paint over it with a rust-covering high temp paint. Then it will look good for a while until the heat gets to it again and then you repaint it again.

The tip seems to be chrome-ish. You can clay bar most of the residue off the tip. The other parts, I dunno.

I know the clay bar works because I clay barred the OEM chrome tip on my car and it shines. It gets covered really quickly though.

Thanks for the replies. Thats not my muffler though, I have the oem stock one that comes with the car. I'll take a picture tomorrow and show you guys.
I also seafoam'ed it= better idle, smoother during regular driving, and it seems to feel better at higher rev....though that could just be me. I've only done it through the break booster line which was fine, it started up on the first try, no stalling or anything.
