Question: If it ain't broke...

Just got done reading how Toyota's reliability rankings from Consumer's is down. So I am curious about why a manufacturer decides to change their process. For example, my understanding is that the Gen 2's were really reliable cars. Why would they change a platform that is reliable (other than decreased manufacturing costs)? Also, is there a reason why a manufacturer would not go back to a previous process? For example go back to making the Camry how they made it for Gen 2, just updating the styling.

Just thinking here. (Maybe too much time on my hands...)

Its not that simple.

New technology makes things cheaper, stronger and easier to make.
New government standards make old things obsolete.
New emissions laws deem old engines and drivetrains obsolete.
New gadgets make new cars more desirable.
Competition from other makes.
Updates to keep up with design trends.

and more....
and more.....

If the Camry looked the same and performed the same as today as the Gen 2 did when it came out, not one would buy it. Think about it, a 150HP V6 vs a 268HP V6, improved handling and suspension, newer safety features such as multiple airbags, ABS, traction control, stability control, etc.

Lets see...how do i express my opinion on this corporate decision thing here...ah, young grasshopper- how do you say "muckity-muck" in Japanese? The ways of whom are and will forever be unknown among the peasants -

Muckity Muck: A high ranking local or divisional manager with sufficient authority to cause delays and/or inject serious complications in projects. Never cross a muckity muck.
