92 camry loss of power

I have a camry v6 that idles rough and lost acceleration but runs fine once underway, the weird thing is if the aircleaner is unlatched it runs ok. I cleaned the mafs and changed the fuel filter but still the problem exsist. could it be a bad mafs , no engine code has showed up ?

Is there an obstruction in the intake ducting up to the air cleaner?

Since it seems to run ok with air cleaner unlatched - the only guess i have is that the problem concerns intake air. Like the engine is not getting enough of it at idle. This might point to dirty throttle body area (try cleaning it with carb cleaner). Also the engine could have a worn throttle body plenum (it is aluminum and can wear under the throttle butterfly from the metal part touching it, and this would affect idle air mixture, giving it too much air at idle). I'm not sure how you'd test for this condition though. If the plenum did turn out to be the problem the fix is to replace it.

Also since the problem is only at idle, this means it only occurs at high vacuum condition, which points to a possible vacuum leak somewhere. The usual locations are the hoses and connections, sometimes they are split or cut and it is hard to find unless you inspect the hose closely.

And since the problem occurs at idle, there are two more easy things to check: PCV valve and EGR valve. To check the pcv valve, first find it, then remove it and shake it. If you hear a click it is ok, if it is gummed up change it.
To check egr, find it and reach underneath it. With the engine at idle, push up under the egr valve on the diapragm and the idle should change. If it doesnt, change it or try running with it block off to see if this makes a difference.

Thanks, i'll check all the hoses and the pcv valve , i think i read somewhere you could spray something on the hoses to find the leaks , do you know of any such thing?

Carb cleaner is good for this, if you have a vacuum leak you will hear the idle change when you spray it on the leak. And if you do have a leak and some gets inside the engine, it just burns away.

did you check to make sure you don't have a rodent's nest in the little intake pip that goes int the fender? Also did you try unlatching the airbox and holding the filter up the intake side to see if it'll run fine with it unlatched but still filter, if it runs fine, I'd think it is a mouse or something. just something to check.

I'm pretty decent at removing mice........sorry could resist an avatar joke.

take the throttle out and let it sit in carb cleaner for a while, then spray it again and pay most attention to the throttle flap hinges(or whatever its called but you get the idiea)after that i would nee to see it,but take the trottle out for A good cleaning, just make shure you get a new gasket and its not folded over when reinstalling

I got my ass handed to me by a car that did the same thing.

The air filter was perfectly clean but when I removed it the car ran fine. It turns out that it was a cheap air filter and the paper part of the filter wouldn't flow hardly any air. The car would not idle well and would frequently stall at idle.

I replaced the air filter and it worked perfectly. Believe it or not, that's the truth.

I highly doubt that it's your problem also, but it's worth checking into.

EDIT: By the way. I would not submerge your throttle body in carb cleaner as recommended above. Only use a specified throttle body cleaner to clean it so that it does not get damaged. Also, the throttle "flap hinges" are actually called the throttle plate and throttle shaft.
