Well, once again my camry has disappoint me, this will be the THIRD wheel bearing that has gone bad in this car since i owned it, which is about 8,000 miles...bad very bad, Personally I do not think it is worth it to fix it, I need something i could trust more than that, do any of you have comments or suggestions on that, by the way, to fix the wheel bearing on my car 40 bucks for bearint, and 110 Shoprate for labor, And I have yet to talk to the mechanic that worked on it putting the 2 new bearings in it, he is out of town til Monday, and is booked through ALL next week, i really need a car for work too which is very though to think of when i have parents that work in separate towns so it would be hard for me to use one of their cars.....
I'm sorry to hear. Must be rough. I know how you feel bout needing a car to get to work and places though. I'm still going through it.
Where in Minnesota you at?

Jeff
find a new mechanic.....maybe that's your problem.
Originally posted by CamryDX is it worth it to dump more money into a car with 218K miles?, especially since after the bearing is fixed it needs alignment and rubber
I've got 230k MILES on my car as well...one engine one tranny...but I'd never give up my camry...ever.
I'd dump as much needed into this car to keep it running for as long as I possibly could.
**edit
btw my car is 4 years newer and has the same amount of miles..not to mention the fact that I drive in Boston and the potholes are freakin killer here

well i have a set of craftsman hand tools, a toolbox full, but i dont know how to do the pressed style bearing, for some reason on 91 its pressed, not tapered, and on the estimated time to do its 2.4 hours for a mechanic...I'm still thinking if i'm going to or not, i might just end up selling the car and getting something a little new with less miles, i trust the car otherwise than that, but I stole it buying it for 200 bucks, But if i do keep it my plans are to do that wheel bearing, and get it aligned for 41 bucks, and put some new winter rubber on front..
Does anyone know whta could be making that bearing go bad every 4000 miles approx, I bought a new(used) hub the first and second time, and they didn't have a ridge like the one i know about that you are supposed to grind off if its there, but neither one had it, i could have used the 2nd knuckle i got from the scrap yard, but i just went ahead and had the new bearing put in because its a Warranty return anyways..I have thought about getting a whole new steering knuckle, but i do not know where i could get that from new knuckle, bearing, and hub all together....does anyone know of a site where i could get all that brand new? if the price is right i'd probably rather do that than spending all my money on a different car, Would the tires being a little otu of align, as in the insides were wearing cause that bearing to wear away quicker? the mechanic i go to is fully certified and pretty good, he's always booked a week to a week and a half long, two guys running the shop too, He cut me a half off labor deal the 2nd time, and who knows about this time if i go to him again, but he's one of the ones i trust the most around here....the iron range in minnesota doesn't have much...

Yeah the bearing is pressed into the back of the knuckle.
I had a bearing go bad on me and I couldn't get the damn thing out. Heated it up with a torch and beat on it with a hammer, stupid thing was seized in there. So I ended up buying a used knuckle & hub assembly from TAP Recycling.

Was the bearing pressed in properly? If not it'll go bad or get f**ked up in the process.
Originally posted by CamryDX The guy said there were no seals both times he took the thing apart, that a$$ He should have known there are seals inside there if he's a mechanic,
Theres a rubber seal on the front and backside of the knuckle.
Heres some pics of the busted wheel bearing from my car:
Thanks well when that mechanic gets back into town monday i'm going to talk to him and see what the hell is going on, but i'm pretty pissed about it all
well guys thanks for everything, I fixed my car myself this time with a used knuckle from TAP and So far so good, The problem I believe was that my axle was torqued too much, so i'm still talking to the mechanic do any of you guys think he should do something about this? 2 bearings were wrecked because he torqued the hub lock nut to 218FT/LB instead of the right 137FT/LB I personally dont know if i could hold him totally responsible for that, but somewhat i could because the torque spec he had on my car was wrong on the manufactur sheet he had. It also seems like when he fixed it my steering wheel was turned a little to the right, and now when i'm done with it i took it for a ride lasnight, and it doesn't lok to be to the right anymore, and my car rides smoother than it ever has, and doesnt' pull at all, it used to pull heavily to the right, now i just have to get it aligned so i dont eat the insides of another set of tires
Congrats! I'm glad everything's finally going well for ya.
I'd bring your conserns to the shop managers attention, see if he'll refund any of your money.
