Lightbulb Easiest way to change oil w/o benefit of a garage or driveway~!!

Sup guys I was looking at another thread in this forum and figured that one problem that plagues many of us is no driveway or garage to change our oil, especially if we're in college or living in an apartment building which unfortunately for me are both problems.

Of course you could always go to Pep Boys, Autozone, Valvoline, or Jiffy Lube...but what good would that do when they charge us for labor, parts, labor, labor, and you don't get the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself?

Simple solution..we all hate Fram but they've got a great invention which I use and have to say is quite good. Sure Drain. A modified oil plug which allows you to crawl under your car take off an outer cap, attach a tube and let the oil drain with no mess. You can easily have it drain into a gallon milk jug and drop it off at you local parts store for disposal..dumping oil down the gutter is just fuc*ed up. You require NO TOOLS. Just your hands, oil, filter, a jug to hold the dirty stuff, and a couple of rags or paper towels.

Im not too sure but I think all Gen-3 and up 4 and 6 cyl are part SD3. I think all Gen-2 are SD5. You may wanna check the Fram site. Hope this helps all the DIY'ers.

I've been thinking about this too. Does it stick-out too much? I'm worried I can hit something with it and lose oil if it breaks. Does it look ti closes securely with no leaks?

I havent had a problem at all...Its got a rubber o-ring ensuring a tight fit..plus the tube which connects to the plug has a metal wire which makes the oil drain. So even when you have the cap off no oil drains w/o the hose attachment The cap is there to keep dirt out of the connection.

In terms of hitting things I have H & R's so no problem there. The cap itself and the new plug dont stick out any further than probably a 1/4" Only way you can really hit something to knock it off is if you rode around on your rotors

Sounds like a good idea for a easy and no-mess oil change, but what about when removing the oil filter? Whenever I remove mine the oil starts leaking out and drips down at several places under the car. Unless there's some technique that I dont' know about that prevents that.

Just let it sludge up then you get no mess whatsoever, that's what I do!

j/k obviously

If you let it drain past the trickle part, theoretically the filter will drain out as well. I typically take a shop towel and hold it underneath the filter and right up against the block. Typically that absorbs almost all the oil.

I'm curious about this plug insert. HOw likely is it that it will pop open while driving? Does it seem pretty secure?

three words for that one..

YOUR NEIGHBOR'S LAWN~!

no but seriously that is a good point..I still havent perfected it but if you make sure ur engine is cool..never change ur oil after its warmed up....the freakin exhaust manifold can get HOT and fried forearms suck dic*

some old cut up shirts (this is for gen3 i dunno where the filter is on a gen2) theres like a little recess under the section where the oil filter screws in..if you get those shirts and have them wrapped under the filter u can get minimal spill..if you really have a thing for the environment then a piece of cardboard is all u really need just place it right below the area of the filter theres kind of like little channels which direct the oil in a certain direction..not much oil will spill.

The actual modified plug is the same as the nut used to plug ur oil pan. But its modified so that when the hose is connected oil will drain...unless of course u use a stick...DON'T LOSE THE HOSE.

In terms of popping open..since the plug is screwed in like the regular plug..no problem there..the cap that covers the plug is a screw on..like I said above there is also a rubber o-ring which creates a very tight seal..very minimal chance of coming off unless u dont tighten it properly.

In the picture notice the threads on the plug itself..the cap is a screw on..my hose is orange though not clear..

I'm getting it for my next oil change - looks good to me! Thanks!

Do you think the plug is magnetic (to remove metal shavings, if any)?

Unfortunately I don't think it'll do it on its own. If you fear shavings or other debris in your system buy a flush, and you may actually want to clean out your oil pan itself. Will take some time but definately better then having things in your oil

I got mine installed. For the 5sfe Gen 4 it is SD-3 model. Fits OK - will try how it drains on my next change...

if i don't have my ramps, then i just drive my driverside up a curb, gives you tons of room and it puts the drain plug down (3vz)
