You might first want to get a trustable mechanic to check it out. It might not even be the tranny, however listening to you say the engine is revving higher then it should makes me suspect it is. So you could go about it several ways.
If you're a bit of a DIY'er and you know how to change the oil, why not try changing the A/T fluid this weekend. Drive it around and see if its improved. If not then maybe it is the transmission, slippage is a tell-tale sign of upcoming transmission failure.
Are you feeling, hard upshifts, down shifts i.e. kicking while shifting? When you stomp the pedal is there a bit of lag like the engine is spooling up and and then you go? If not, then whens the last time you had your car serviced? The timing belt, the spark plugs, the air filter, all things that can have an effect on your acceleration. (It's kind of hard to tell when we can't be there to experience the problem)
If you really think its the tranny then do not rebuild you existing tranny it could potentially cost you much more and take much longer if you don't go to the right mechanic.
You can either go about it two ways:
1) Contact a junkyard for a tranny in good condition. I did that and got a '95 sedan's that was wrecked cause of a rear-end accident. Tranny had only 40K mi.. I've driven a good 70K mi. on it. It only cost $2400 including a 3 month warranty.
2) Check out a place that does rebuilts with a warranty. Like Pheonix Hardparts a very reputable company.
