Unhappy 3vz-fe transmission

Hi, I own a 93 v6 camry, and it has about 165,XXX miles on it. Nothing was ever rebuilt on it, and I was wondering why the cars performance is so poor. My problem is, when I start to accelerate from a stop, the car revs up too much for the rate it is going. When I want to keep up with the flow of traffic, the rpms go past 4,000 sometimes even 5,000 when I press the pedal normally as if I was driving any other automatic car. The car also takes a long time to shift, for example, sometimes, I am flooring the vehicle but it doesn't even change gears. I was wondering if anyone else out there has this problem with their camry, and if anyone can give me some help. It would be greatly appreciated.

my friend's old passat wagon had that problem, the clutch packs were slipping cuz him adn his family tended to neglect all their cars. we were out on a roadtrip in maine when teh tranny was slipping like crazy goign up a hill. it was fine the whole week we were up tehre til that day we went to town to some groceries and we barely made it up the hill. then we coudln't go any further cuz it was slipping too much so we had it towed adn the dealer said it would cost 3000 bucks to have it rebuilt

You might first want to get a trustable mechanic to check it out. It might not even be the tranny, however listening to you say the engine is revving higher then it should makes me suspect it is. So you could go about it several ways.

If you're a bit of a DIY'er and you know how to change the oil, why not try changing the A/T fluid this weekend. Drive it around and see if its improved. If not then maybe it is the transmission, slippage is a tell-tale sign of upcoming transmission failure.

Are you feeling, hard upshifts, down shifts i.e. kicking while shifting? When you stomp the pedal is there a bit of lag like the engine is spooling up and and then you go? If not, then whens the last time you had your car serviced? The timing belt, the spark plugs, the air filter, all things that can have an effect on your acceleration. (It's kind of hard to tell when we can't be there to experience the problem)

If you really think its the tranny then do not rebuild you existing tranny it could potentially cost you much more and take much longer if you don't go to the right mechanic.

You can either go about it two ways:
1) Contact a junkyard for a tranny in good condition. I did that and got a '95 sedan's that was wrecked cause of a rear-end accident. Tranny had only 40K mi.. I've driven a good 70K mi. on it. It only cost $2400 including a 3 month warranty.

2) Check out a place that does rebuilts with a warranty. Like Pheonix Hardparts a very reputable company.

Good Luck~!

Well, the car has recently had new transmission fluid, along with a bottle of that slick 50 high mileage transmission fluid added to see if it makes a difference. It doesn't. You guys know when you drive automatic cars, the pedals are suppose to be fairly stiff, and very sensitive. It seems my car gas pedal is not very responsive. The car has a new air filter, and new spark plugs, also flushed the radiator coolant, but it still lacks performance. I know the car is rated at 185 hp, with 195lbs. of torque, but other 4 cylinder automatics seems to pull more than it does from a standstill. I don't know if its something to do with the engine internals, or if its the transmission.

well there is something wrong there, and i dont think you will find a definite answer on here. the only way to find out is to go to a mechanic. then maybe he could test drive the car and actually feel what is wrong... its the only way to go. this way, you are just grasping at straws.

What about a manual transmission conversion. I think it is possible but do any of you guys know what type of toyota transmission will be needed and where i can pick one up for a decent pirce. I was wondering if any of you have ever had that done, and what you think of it.
