fuel pump removal

hey everyone... i got a 98 camry v6. I need to change the fuel pump out because its dead. I have never changed a fuel pump on a camry before... so can someone give me a overview of the process? Is it really "do-able" or its not worth the time and give it to a shop to do. Thanks for the help.

The fuel pumps on most Camrys are the same, not too difficult to remove and replace, although it can be a very confusing process without the proper information. I have a Haynes Repair Manual for '97 - '01 Camrys and the process for removal is as follows :

Relieve the fuel system pressure.
(Remove the bottom portion of the rear seat and liner to access the fuel pump/sending unit access cover. Disconnect the harness connector. Start the engine and allow it to run until it stops. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Using an open-end wrench, loosen the fuel line fitting at the bottom of the fuel filter to relieve any extra fuel that is built up in the fuel lines. Be sure to place a shop rag around the bottom of th efilter to catch the residual fuel as it bleeds off. The fuel system pressure is no relieved.)
Remove the fuel pump/sending unit floor service hole cover. Disconnect the electrical connector. Disconnect the fuel line. If equipped with quick connect fittings, you will need a special tool to remove the line. (Available at most auto part stores) Remove the fuel pump/sending unit retaining bolts. Carefully withdraw the fuel pump/sending unit assembly from the tank. Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel pump. Remove the pump assembly. Remove the clip securing the inlet strainer to the pump. Inspect the strainer for contamination, if you suspect it's dirty, replace it.

Reinstallation is reverse of the removal process.

- I hope this information helps, if you'd like, I can send you some illustrations out of the repair manual to assist you if you don't completely understand the instructions. Just reply.
