Okay, I've got a '99 Camry LE, four cylinder, reg. for 140. My guess is the "speed chip" or whatever it may be referred to causes the car to shut off once the speed has reached 120. This causes the car to decelerate as many of you may already know, until the car drops below the 120 mark, then the engine kicks back in. Is there any possible way to over-ride or bypass this thing? I was told it was located within the PCM, and if that's the case, how would that be overridden without replacing the stock PCM? Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
not sure on a camry specifically, but usually it's a governor in your ecu...
you can either have it reprogrammed and have the rev-limiter and speed governor removed (depending on which one is affecting how fast you can go) or you might be able to buy a piggy back that does it for you...
First off, be careful going those speeds...I really don't give a rats ass if you kill yourself 'cause of your own stupidity, but I'm concerned for innocent ppl you might wipe out
Split Second makes a "Frequency Clamp" that should do the job. Do a search on Google and you'll find it.
Thanks man, I appreciate your concern for others as well. But no, this car I plan to use it for show once I get everything done with it. It's not an everyday street car. It just sits all by itself in my garage. So no need to be concerned about those speeds on an open road.
i don't see how suspension would make that big a difference at those speed...
if you're gonna be topping out a lot, i'd invest in higher rated tires (don't want them blowing on you) and maybe slotted brakes to dissipate the heat (stopping from high speeds will warp your rotors)...
i doubt you'll need to remove the speed governor though since it'll take you pretty long to get up that high...worry about getting there quicker first and then worry about top speed
i dunno 'bout u guys but ive taken my car up to around 124 no problems. it doesnt take that long to get up there either we arent driving sohc 4 civics.
tires are a must. shitty tires = possible blow out and you dont wanna go there
suspension is a must. lower profile will reduce drag and besides would you wanna do over a 100 in a jeep or a dropped camry?
but when speeding honestly do it by yourself in the middle of the night. make sure ur buckled in and have a friend around too in case something does go wrong.
in regards to your camry shutting down? sorry got no idea..

reduction in drag will only let you get up to those speeds marginally faster but it still doesn't affect why you should or should not be going that fast on stock/modded suspensions...i just wanna know why skyravefever said that cause i'm not seeing it...
and yes, the i4's take forever to hit those speeds...just cause they're geared to hit faster than 120 doesn't mean you've got the extra power to do it (within a reasonable time/land span)
Because the whale-like suspension on the stock ride is pretty scary when you're going that fast. Too lofty = less road feel. Not that one's going to be able to completely control a 3K lb. object traveling at 120mph, but having the suspension upgrade to gives you a little bit more control.

if you're going to do that, you might as well remove ps cause that'll also make your car more responsive above 20mph or so...
i see your point in that it would give you a little more control, but at those speeds...suspension or not, if you're going to have to absolutely NEED to have nice handling, don't even think your stock tires are gonna be able to grip in any sort of situation...and if you're worried abour response going that fast (which would normally mean you're moving your car in other than a straight line) you shouldn't be driving that fast...
i actually think that maybe a sway bar would help for lateral weight distribution since i'm guessing the affects of it would be a lot more noticeable at that speed...but then again, i've never been that fast and with a need to do something besides drive straight
