open pipe vs catback

hey all, I have some sad news...

seems the lowering will have to wait a bit :s

looks like my cat is breaking down, I hear metal scratchy noises, which is probably the cat deteriorating... must be some sort of cancer :'(

Now I was wondering, should I go open pipe? or catback, what is a catback? what does it cost ? can I pass technical ... . whats it called again... euh, yearly technical checkup for road approval... with it ?

what should I keep in mind ?
tried searching but couldn't find anything usefull for me...

oh and what about the muffler, might aswell upgrade the whole intake/exhaust thingys (no not turbocharging :p )

oh yeah, I'm driving a '94 european GEN3 5SFE

thanks all !!!

hope to cure my car soon

An open pipe just means that you run an ehxaust without a catalytic converter. Without it you will not pass an emissions test in the U.S.; however, I don't know what your emissions tests are like over there.

A cat-back exhaust system is just as it is stated. The whole system, piping and muffler, from the cat back. Therefore purchasing a cat back system would not solve your problem with your catalytic converter because you would still have to replace the cat.

with an open pip system/straight through/straight flow system, you'll lose too much back pressure, so you'll lose a lot of bottom end torque.

your best to go with a cat back with a 2.25" pipe. this way you'll pass your emmissions control and get some top speed and some very nice throaty exhaust note.
