I posted this in the tech forum, but got no help...

I could really use your guy's help if you have any idea how to take care of this situation.

The other day while coming back from Sanfransisco, there was a slight amount of smoke coming out of the steering column. Then it I could smell wires burning. After I got home, i discovered that my headlights wouldn't turn off. Also both my low and high beams were on simultaneously causing heat and therefore almost melting the headlight plugs. The headlight housing was also pretty hot. Anyways, I couldn't turn OFF the lights using the switch, and neither the high/low beam contoller was working. I still have control over the parking lights, but no control over the actual headlights.

I had to take the plugs out of the headlights in order to turn them off...

Could someone tell me what might be wrong? I'm thinking there might be a short inside the steering column where the light switch/ controls are....

If that's the case where can I find directions in taking the column off??

I really need help guys....so please respond.

shorts and shit like that are very hard and expensive to diagnose

unless you have a good working knowledge of electronics and a multi meter, then bring it to the garage, and get ready for an @$$ raping bill coming out the other end

i spent lots of time totally rewiring the taillights on my old volvo, its a bitch, but its no fun for the garage either, and the bill reflects that

in your situation i think they'll probably replace most of the harness and the relays, and that's after a couple hours of diagnostic, worse case the headlights too (if they melted)

i'd say if you cant figure it out already, you dont have the skill to so take it to the dealer. Plus, always list the year model and engine of your car when asking for technical info.
