Okay, I see this question posted all the time and it is NEVER answered. But I'm going to give it another shot.
How do I find the speedometer cable from the bottom of my Gen2, so that I can hook up a drill and test it? My Haynes repair manual doesn't even mention it, and neither my speedometer or odometer are working.
Looking at the bottom of the car, I can only see one cable-type thing feeding into the wheel well. I suspect this is actually the brake hose. Is there a pic of the speedometer cable installed, so I can look it up?
And yes, I took off my instrument cluster to f*** around with it before it died completely. For about a month before it gave up, the speedometer would bob up and down erractically. To the best of my knowledge, I didn't damage it when I removed the instrument cluster.

So are the midway connection and the connection into the tranny the only two accessible connections? I'm going to attempt to pop apart the cable and test it at every point with a drill. Try and see what needs to be done. Is there an attachment point up in the dash that I can disconnect, and then pull the whole upper section of cable out? And cany anyone suggest how to interface the drill to the cable w/o hurting the cable? Or is that even an issue?

I'm looking at the lower section of cable (between tranny and connection) and it looks like it was in contact with the hose directly to the left of it (if you were facing the engine after opening the hood). The other hose must have been hot because it melted the rubber of the speedo cable. I would think that the cable is metal, so I don't know if it being seized up caused any damage in the tranny.
Is there a good place to get a replacement? Preferably in Orlando? The Toyota dealer quoted $30, which doesn't seem like too much.

The cable itself is metal (inner part that drives the speedo).
What you can do is get some fire sleeving from a performance plumbing shop (they sell AN fittings, stainless steel braided hose, etc...) and slip it over the speedo cable.
Speddo started to move erradicly today driving and hover around 20-40 when driving 60-80, did you fix yours way back? can you tell me what to do? Thank you. My trans is manual. Did your cable burn in engine room? can you send photos. Thank you
