You check the Camry/Solara faq yet? At the top of the Camry Forum?

Well you're close on the year part. When people say "gen," it is short for "generation." When someone says "gen 2 Camry," they are referring to the second generation of Camrys. And generations are not just limited to Toyotas. There's others, such as the 2nd gen Acura Integra, 4th gen Ford Mustang, etc. etc. By the way, for a list of what generations covered what years, consult the Camry FAQ sticky at the top of the forum.

your are correct, 97-99 are 4 Gen Camrys, while the 2000-2001 are 4.5 Gens. That means that they are basically the same car except that made a few changes to them.

For example the 97-99 Camrys have one bulb for high and low beams while the 00-01 use two bulbs one for high beam and one for low beam.

Also the 4.5 Gen (00-01) grilles are removable, and have that cheap silver trim around the grille, while the 4 Gen (97-99) grille is apart of the bumper and is the same color as it.

From my experiences with Toyotas, when you get a .5 Gen they are going to come out with a completely new generation for that car.

Another example of the mid gens is the 3 Gen, from 92-94 is 3 Gen while 95-96 is a 3.5 Gen. The 3.5 Gen also introduced the Camry coupe which later became the Solora.
