is the same modification needed on a 5sfe?
Well yes and no.
5S-FE have a external coil. Some gen 3 Camry's with a 5S-FE have a internal coil, but thats mostly Camry's in other countries.
You can use the stock coil with a MSD box or replace it with a aftermarket coil.
The distributor cap has a plugin for the wire from the coil. What you do is buy a MSD coil wire and it'll come with a post. You shove that post into the plugin on the dist. cap and seal around it with silicone.
The part you need is MSD 8403 (8mm wire) or 84039 (8.5mm wire):
ok jsut want to make sure i've got it all b4 i start buying parts, i appreciate the info.
So if i keep the stock coils, i can purchase the smd wires and not have to make any modification to them right? Or do i have to covert the ends from female to male?

If you keep the the stock coil you don't need to mess with the wire from the dist. cap to the coil.
You just pull the plug (has 2 wires) on top of the coil so that the stock ignition system no longer charges it and use the wires from the MSD box instead.
88 LE I think you are my salvation. I have a 1997 3SFE engine Toyota RAV4. They came with distributer and external coil. I have the following parts;
1. MSD 6A
2. SS Blaster Coil 8207
3. Tach Adapter 8910EIS
4. HEI Coil Wire Blaster 2, Super Cond. [84039]
How do I hook all these parts together? I've tried MSD web site but they give a very general idea and no concrete info. Almost all is base on Honda. . Is their a diagram or some where on the net that I can go for for installation? Can you draw me a diagram, if it ain't too much trouble? Help, it has been more then a year since I've been looking for answers.
If you look closely at the wire diagram from MSD, you see a universial one. Also all the wiring on the MSD is the same, only thing different is the wire color on the stock plug. Basically you install the MSD box between the coil and stock ignitor. It means cut the wire to stock coil and connect the box in between. Of course you have to connect power and the adaptor according to MSD instruction. You'll need to find ground wire on the stock coil plug, can't mess it up.
Red wire: + (positive) from stock coil
Black wire: - (negative) from stock coil
Black plug with green and purple wire: Hook it up to the plug on the MSD box. You might have to use the extension harness that comes with the MSD depending on where you mount the tach adapter.
How to hookup the coil
------------------------------
Theres a plug that goes into the top of the stock coil that contains 2 wires. You need to find out which wire is positive and negative.
After you find out which wire is which, unplug it. Connect the positive wire to the red wire on the MSD and to the red wire on the tach adapter. Connect the negative wire to the black wire on the tach adapter.
Disconnect the stock coil wire. It goes from the stock coil to the distributor cap.
Shove the post that comes with the MSD coil wire into the hole (where the stock coil wire was) on the distributor cap and silicone around it.
Connect the MSD coil wire to the distributor cap and your new coil.
Hookup your new coil (orange and black wire from MSD).
How to test the MSD
---------------------------
1. Disconnect the end of the coil wire going to the distributor cap. Place the end of this wire near any bare metal surface in the engine bay.
2. Unplug the tach adapter. The black plug with the purple and green wire.
3. Turn on the ignition, but don't start the car.
4. Short the purple and green wire on the MSD with a piece of wire (strip off the ends of the wire).
5. When you remove the wire you should see a spark come out the end of the coil wire.
