anyone else in their gen 3 camry notice that even if the fuel meter is banging on the empty mark and the low fuel light is on, that when they fill up they put in like 14 maybe close to 15 gallons even though the fuel tank is like 18.5 gallons (or so it says in my owner's manual). maybe toyota did this on purpose so people won't be left stranded without gas. just an observation that i recently noted :p
lol, my friend did that once in his bmw 740, his fuel meter was hitting empty and the light was on for some tiem and him and my other friend drove into a gas station and as he pulled in his engine died from lack of gas and he coasted in the rest of the way
i kno what you mean, i'm always driving in local roads so there's a lot of traffic lights plus i usually drive during rush hour and i like to hit the throttle when traffic gets moving. filled up this morning, 260 miles on 14.9 gallons, about 17mpg, i normally get 280 with 13 to 14 gallons (about 19 to 21 mpg) but i been more lead-footed and hit the highway much less.
anyone have suggestions for better fuel economy other than go easy with the throttle? gen3 auto I4 if curious

bah, i love the sound of the v6 above 5000, when she's pulling hard, its awesome
i too love the sound of my camry at 5 grand, mine is a four cylinder however. gen 3 280 miles on 14-15 gallons is right on the money for me too just filled up today
I've just filled 2 tanks as of yet, I got about 27mpg mixed (not a whole lot of stop-and-go, I was at least moving most of the time). That's about 460 miles on the tank.
The thing I noticed was that I get 300+ miles on the first half of the tank, but about 50% less on the bottom half. I think the guage is calibrated, er, "differently."
I've been lucky to beat EPA estimates on every car I've driven. I usually shift between 2-3k, usually closer to 2k. I still like to set the horses free on a short on-ramp, though. *evil grin*
Also, if there's a long downhill ahead of me, I'll shift into neutral (I'm not sure if this is ok for an AT but there shouldn't be a problem for MT).
Earthmike: I've got the same car as you and that's about the mileage I get consistently. However recently I discovered that if I keep the revs up around 2800-3200 and try not to drop below 2500 I get excellent distance on a tank. On a trip from Indiana to Minnesota I got 36-37mpg. Mostly highway, some stop and go in the Twin Cities and Chicago, no tail wind.
