USA Oil Filter Plug

I have a Cam Hybrid
I was told by a Toyota dealer (that I have little trust) that there is a plug on the oil filter that stops the oil from going back into the filter when it is turned off. Does anyone know anything about this plug? How important is this? I would like to start taking this to a regular auto repair place that I trust.

Usually it's just a piece of silicone or rubber not a "plug."

I think it is called something like a by pass valve. When there is no oil pressure it holds oil inside the filter body. This way during start ups oil will get to the vital engine parts faster. It will also open when the filtering material gets dirty and cannot pass enough oil through.

Correct me if I am wrong,

Sam

I think Sam is right in his description of how the valve works, but I believe it's more commonly referred to as the "anti-drainback valve". It keeps oil inside the filter so it will pump oil more quickly to the vital engine parts on startup, as Sam described.

You can take your car to anybody you want to for the oil and filter changes. Just keep your receipts to show that the oil changes were done, and make sure the receipts show the date and mileage of the oil changes.

Mike

A one-way check valve usually made of silicone installed in the filter. Oil can go into the filter when the engine is running but cannot drain back into the engine oil pan when off. This is a standard feature in most filters.

You are confusing the bypass and ADBV. They have separate functions.

The bypass valve opens when too much pressure builds up in the filter so that there will be some oil flow.

The ADBV is a silicone (reddish orange color) or nitrile rubber (black) piece that prevents oil from exiting the filter when the engine is off. Silicone valves are generally found on more expensive filters. You can see the ADBV if you look through the inlet holes.

Thanks, touringcamry! I have never heard about these valves.

The anti drainback valve is thin and very flexible.

There was a discussion on Use Net Honda group about how the by pass valves work and how well they hold oil.
I did my own test.

After an oil change I thoroughly drained a filter for a couple of days until it was completely empty . I then pushed on the by pass valve and the filter got filled with oil again. It proved that the valve worked.

And the filter was Purolator. The cheapest one from Pep Boys.

The bypass valve opens when too much pressure builds up inside the filter. Usually this is due to filter media that is too dirty to let oil pass. This could potentially stop oil flow so you have the bypass to let oil continue flowing even if it is dirty. I guess some dirty oil is better than no oil right?

The Pep-Boys house brand, I forgot what it's called, is made by Purolator also, but I don't know how they compare to the Purolator Premiums (the regular white can filter). Purolator filters are typically considered good quality filters unlike Frams.

Photo shows the bypass plunger open.YZZF1 filter. The plunger is flared at the end but narrows inside so that there is a wide opening for oil flow when the bypass is open.
