Yes camry engines had a serious sludging problem in the past. they claim to have fixed it. The sludging problem was causing by two things 1)toyota reecommended too long an oil change interval, and people were going by it and their engines were sludging up because 2) the pcv system has or had a design flaw of some kind; and so too much moisture was staying in the oil or something - theres plenty of info about it here, do a search here and you will even find the toyota service advisory and tsb's on this issue.
If you are going to go 10,000 miles, Mobil 1 is the one to use. But if this were my car, leaving ANY kind of oil in for 10k just makes me nervous.
I'll put it this way, i bought my 1988 Nissan truck in 1992 with 88,000 miles on it. I changed the oil every 2,000 - 3,000 miles. About 200,000 miles later i did a valve job and in car overhaul even though it was running fine (i mashed a valve by turning the engine backwards, trying to change the timing chain and just decided to do all this stuff at that time).
At my oil change intervals, all the parts were clean and wear was light/minimal. The rings were good for another 50k at least but i changed them anyway. Timing chain and gears looked like new, no wear ridges and no bow to the chain. the con rod bearings looked fine so i just put them back in!
The point is this, you cant go wrong by changing the oil frequently. I have owned 10 or 12 cars in my life but never worn out an engine yet. But its your parents decision after all how often they change the oil.
