I had the dealer replace the valve cover gasket and distributor o-ringin my 95 Camry. Right after I take it home, it starts dripping oil from the timing belt cover. I take it back to them, and they claim that their repairs increased the pressure and caused the cam shaft seal, the oil pump seal and another seal to fail, causing the timing belt to become saturated and all needs to be replaced for $460.
Does any of that sound right, or are they trying to cover the asses? What pressure could have increased by a simple valve cover job to cause three other seals to fail? Oil pressure?
"they claim that their repairs increased the pressure and caused the cam shaft seal, the oil pump seal and another seal to fail, causing the timing belt to become saturated and all needs to be replaced for $460."
Their statement doesn't seem plausible to me. Nether of those 2 repairs would have increased the oil pressure. Both would just keep the oil from leaking out from worn gaskets.
Just curious. What was the cost of the repair work they have already done?
Yes, strange how the dealer states the repairs caused the new leaks yet as stated why didn’t they warn you or better still try to offer these repairs (and make more money) up front.
Unless something else is wrong the engine should vent through the PCV valve. The oil pump seal is pressured by motor oil flowing to the filter and not vented to the engine.
Maybe the dealer did something wrong and is covering.
Sounds too strange that all the seals would start leaking at the same time, just does not happen.
Dealer charged $160 for the valve cover/o-ring last week.
After facing the service guy with the PCV thing, he stated it was pressure "underneath" that caused the seals to fail. He also stated that it was "co-incidence" that they failed right after they had worked on the other.
I am with most of you, sounds like something happend, and they are CYA.
I paid it to get the car back, but won't take ANYTHING to them again. I will find a reputable mechanic around here, and I am writing Toyota USA, the owner of the dealership, and the BBB. Maybe someone will give some of my money back?

Unfortunately if they did what you asked them to, the oil leaking from other seals is a seperate repair and not related to the original. You had them replace the valve cover gasket and o-ring, neither of these are related to the new leaks as none of the parts required the timing belt cover to come off - the only way they would have seen the new leaks. And i know you are irate that you paid all that money but the engine still leaks, but if they did as contracted you have a seperate repair to deal with -
Personally I would take the car to someone else and get a quote and hopefully never go back to toyota. My opinion is biased though, since they tried to screw me royally in a similar way. Any time you spend $100-200 at toyota you're almost guaranteed they will try to soak you for 10 times more within a few days. I feel unless you have a fairly new car, just never go to the dealership.

Has anyone checked the PCV valve yet? This check is easy to do. If it is plugged up it may well have contributed to the leaks (though I suspect aging seals also contributed). It might give you future problems if left unattended. You can do the check yourself. Simply locate the PCV valve, remove the hose at one end, remove the PCV valve from the engine and shake it. If it rattles it's OK. If it doesn't fix it or replace it.

You beat me to it, only
a) just reading the title of the thread, I planned all along to say
YES
b) I did indeed read the content (all 10 posts!) and the answer is still
YES!
I think that in general, whenever approaching any dealership of any kind, if you keep in mind the idea that they are trying to screw you out of your money, you won't go wrong.
If you learn differently, write to Toyota USA so that they can set things straight.
And no, Toyota USA isn't going to do anything. The best you can hope for is a rebate or credit towards your NEXT service/repair there.
Oh gee, thanks.
