Steering Wheel Clicking When Turn ???

Hi,

I have an 05 camry and something wrong with the steering wheel column.

When I turn the steering wheel, it does not turn smoothly and I can feel the clicking noise once I move the steering wheel back and forth.

Anybody know what's wrong with it ?

Thanks,

Please try to clarify the clicking noise(?) feeling(?) that you are experiencing. Same with "steering smoothly". Do you mean that the steering wheel doesn't turn smoothly or that when you turn the steering wheel that the car doesn't seem to respond to the wheel correctly, or is the car wandering back and forth when you turn?

How many miles on the car?

My main worry is a worn or broken suspension part that could be a serious safety concern. If the car isn't moving to where you are steering to or if it is wandering back and forth I encourage you to have it looked at professionally, soon. I wouldn't drive it at highway speeds until then.

However, there are a lot of other explanations that aren't as serious. More info would be helpful

Thank you for your response,

The wheel response to the steering wheel just fine. It's just the clicking noise and feel the clicking inside the steering column, the noise is not that lound but it's enough to bother me.

The car had 47k miles, I've had this problem since I bought the car with 27k miles and about 2 yrs ago.

I realized the problem after the 1st week when I bought the car but I thought it's not a major but until now I've been having this problem long enough to bother me.

should have had it taken care of 2 years ago!

here's the relevant thread with the TSB:
2003 Camry Steering Issues

since its no longer under warranty, you may be looking at a $400 - 700 repair, depending on your dealership.

^ I'm having that TSB done on my car as we speak. Hopefully anyway..they put down "customer hears clunking noise from steering" on the work order so I hope the techs there will diagnose it right and change the steering intermediate shaft.

Anyway.. I lived with it for a while too. It doesn't get really annoying until it's too late. For me, I was 3 weeks out of warranty. Dealer quoted ~$475 including parts and labor.
