Head removal on 3sfe?

My damn Haynes dont say Jack Shiat bout head removal or overhaul, and I dont feel like buyin a Chiltons just yet. Wonderin if neone on here knows of ne place that has it on the web, or if Chiltons is even worth it. Im lookin for a complete head from a 3SGTE, but I kinda need to know how to remove mine before I put on a new one!

BTW: Ne idea on how many h/p Ill gain if I do a headswap?

Chiltons has a section about head removal.

You should look into a factory service manual.

You need more then just the head.

Intake manifold, throttle body, sensors, wiring harness, etc... Basicly all the shit that bolts onto the head.

chilton's manuals suck. Don't buy one they have crappy diagrams and don't give you a good idea of what you are dealing with until you are halfway through the project.

factory manuals are the way to go.

Yea, definately don't use that haynes or chilton's crap. Get the factory service manuals. But just disconnect the fuel lines, sensors, vacuum lines, throttle cable, air intake, exhaust manifold, valve cover and cams. Then undo the headbolts and take it off. I think that's how it goes anyway, it's been a while. Take the intake manifold and tb off with it.

Noob Question: bout how long u think it will take if Ive never done it before, and do I need any kinda special tools other than sockets, wrenches, and a BFH (big fvckin hammer)? And if its all about disconnecting shiat, and labeling it all, do I really need a service manual?

and BTW: I havent checked round here yet, but I was wonderin how much a P&P went for heads nowadays, or what I can be lookin at so I dont get screwed over.

And what about the valves, do I need to replace those? And if so, is there newhere I can get em from OTHER than Toyota? Just for mine, they were gonna charge me 25 bux per valve! And seals, springs, all that good shiat? None of my local parts stores have em, and NOPI aint got nething!

Dunno. As long as it takes you to get it done?

You might need a 8mm allen socket (allen tip fitted on a socket) for the headbolts. Theres 2 styles of headbolts for a 3S-FE (8mm allen or 12mm 12 point).

And a overhead valve spring compressor if your going to be removing the valves, springs, etc...

A service manual is good to have.

Taking it apart is not that hard, but reinstalling it is another story. The cam bearing caps only go in one place (their labeled (I1, I2, E1, E2, etc...) and they have to be torqued down in a certain order. The headbolts also have to be torqued down in a certain order.

In other words everything needs to be reinstalled correctly.

$300 - $500?

If the valves are good and within spec you can clean them up and reuse em.

As for aftermarket valves, I dunno.
